Mandatory registration via Anitaberber@kunstraumkreuzberg.de We will attempt a séance - asking - Anita Berber to join us from the afterlife with the use of a life drawing model under the instruction of experienced medium Doris Draeger. Participants are invited to draw the model live during the session between 18:00-20:00. Anita Berber died on November 10th 1928 at Bethanien Hospital in Kreuzberg (in the very same house). The woman who once scandalized Berlin with her androgynous looks, her erotic and seductive dances and her sultry on-screen appearances was called the “Goddess of the Night,” the “Priestess of Debauchery,” the very symbol of Weimar decadence, feminist and conceptual artist. She was all these things and more. And during her brief life, Berber utterly scandalized Berlin during the 1920s. Not an easy task! As we continue celebrating our 15-year anniversary this week, we fondly recall the 2010 exhibition "Otto Dix," the first ever solo show in North America devoted to this influential German artist. More than almost any other German painter, Otto Dix (1891-1969) and his works have profoundly influenced the popular notion of the Weimar Republic. His paintings were among the most graphic visual representatives of that period, exposing with unsparing and wicked wit the instability and contradictions of the time. Composed of over 100 masterpieces, the exhibition addressed Dix’s traumatic experiences as a soldier in World War I, the genre of portraiture, sexuality, and religious and allegorical paintings. Otto Dix, Portrait of the Dancer Anita Berber (c.1925) 120cm x 65cm The Dancer Anita Berber is one of Dix most well-known paintings. The subject, Anita Berber, was an infamous figure in Berlin Wiemar society. A burlesque dancer with a scandalous sex life (she swung both ways and often appeared in pornographic reels), a nasty drug habit (lots of cocaine), and her constant state of dishabille (she liked to go around dressed only in a mink coat) made her a unique and polarizing figure. She is shown above in the red costume of her "Morphine" dance, one of a few performances named after various substances.
