I love me a multigenerational family saga, especially so when it revolves around a blended and somewhat dysfunctional family like my own • The story spans nearly 50 years using a nonlinear timeline yet the amount of depth and development that Patchett is able to sink into each and every character is astounding. She has an undeniable talent for creating characters that you not only become attached to, but that you may also see yourself and loved ones in. The story always feels entirely authentic and the themes that it covers- mortality, loss, forgiveness- are all hard hitters. It’s really incredible how Patchett’s soft narrative and gentle storytelling is capable of packing such an intense punch. I’m so grateful that so many of you urged me to read this one and now can’t recommenced it enough myself! • Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5 •

Just want to say a quick thank you to everyone who was so kind about my last post on Ann Patchett’s COMMONWEALTH ! So many of you left sweet comments and it just made me feel really good about the content that I’ve been working to create and share with you guys and a big hello to all of the new followers I’ve gained since making that post! • I hope you’re all enjoying this last week of May! •

Révélation ! ✨✨ ~ Dernière lecture du prix Relay Voyageurs Lecteurs et dernier jour pour voter ~ Dernière lecture que j’ai fait en bout de course parce que c’est celle qui m’attirait le moins et qu’elle ressemblait à un gros pavé en plus ~ Et Bim !!! Ça m’est tombé dessus comme toutes ces choses qu’on n’attend pas ! Le coup de cœur absolu pour ce bouquin, l’auteur et son style ! ❤️❤️❤️ Ça ne plaira pas forcément à tout le monde peut-être mais c’est lisse à l’extérieur et piquant/mordant à l’intérieur ! Ann Patchett a cette écriture qui tient en équilibre entre une forme de nostalgie et un sens du détail et de la formule qui lui permet d’épingler les travers et les incohérences des êtres avec un humour incisif . C’est réjouissant, jubilatoire et doux. Alors imaginez !! Albert fuit chez lui pour ne pas supporter les enfants qu’il fait à sa femme et tombe amoureux de la sublime Beverly au baptême de sa dernière fille où il se pointe avec du gin (détail qui a son importance puisque ça va bousculer l’équilibre de cet événement). Il l’enlève à son mari et se retrouve à la tête d’une famille recomposée avec le même syndrome de fuite. Et chacun de ces enfants a un caractère bien à lui... alors quand Franny devenue adulte se met en couple avec un écrivain et qu’avec tout ce qu’il sait, il écrit un roman, vous pouvez imaginer le qu’il provoque !! Complètement irrésistible !!! C’est mon choix je ne peux pas faire autrement tant je suis conquise !! ~ A la base je n’aime pas partager mais comme là je suis obligée ,vous pouvez même le gagner ! Commonwealth – Ann Patchett . Demain sur le blog, vous pourrez lire mon avis complet sur ce 5ème roman en lice pour le @prixrelay 2019! . Des 5, voici celui que j’ai le moins aimé. De cette histoire de famille recomposée, de personnages forts et humains, j’ai reconnu l’influence de John Irving, mais la magie n’a pas pris... Attention! J’ai conscience d’avoir lu ce roman au mauvais moment. Comment apprécier une histoire qui commence par une trahison et l’abandon d’un mariage alors que je viens de jurer amour et fidélité jusqu’à ce que la mort nous sépare, et même après? Ne vous fiez peut-être pas à mon ressenti ce coup-ci . En revanche, j’ai trouvé le style de Ann Patchett (sa traduction en français) assez lourd. Les phrases sont longues et j’ai eu beaucoup de mal à me concentrer et comprendre ce que je lisais... . . Et vous, vous lisez quoi?

In the vice-presidential mansion in an unnamed South American country, one of the world’s most celebrated Sopranos comes to sing at the birthday party of a Japanese businessman. Before the end of her performance, a band of terrorists descends. Their target is the president, but he is not there, having stayed home to watch his beloved soap opera. Now the partygoers become the hostages. Hailing from 60 countries, they communicate through a gifted interpreter, another hostage, the assistant to the businessman whose birthday brought them together. Days, weeks, then months go by and as the situation becomes increasingly charged and unstable, the hostages - and some of their captors - connect in ways that no one would have imagined. . I’ve read four of Patchett’s other books and always felt embarrassed that I hadn’t made it to Bel Canto, probably her most widely-praised and admired work. My husband has been gently nagging me to read it for nearly twenty years, and for whatever reason, I kept shutting him down, poor guy. “Nope! No thanks! I’m good!” Let’s just say that after reading it, I’ll be paying closer attention to my fella’s suggestions. We finally had our book club meeting last week, twenty years in the making, just us at the kitchen table over our morning coffee. I hope it was worth waiting for. Book club, accomplished! . Bel Canto is gorgeous, a quietly heart-breaking, wise read. If you can point me towards anyone who writes prose as clear - precise and yet revelatory - as Patchett’s, I’m listening. The way that she slowly peels back the layers to show us these characters is masterful. This book made me think about the human tendency to judge others so immediately, to slide people quickly into categories that reassure us and our sense of how things are. What worlds are inside of each person? What does it take for us to stop and see others, even those who have wronged us (perhaps especially them)? What is left when so much that we count as valuable in our lives is stripped from us, or released by us? The answer this story offers is profound: perhaps everything.
