It is between Mt. Thought it would be a good month to finally post it . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⚙️ Machined from 52-ply Technicolor Plywood on a baltic birch strata. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is the third video in the series of three over the past year. “Citrus Canyon” and “Rainbow Range” came before it. Posting new cuts of the others this week so they are finally all together on my feed . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This is 1 meter Mount Rainier data (from @usgs) with a slight plateau at the peak to leave a spot of black from the first layer. This is a throw away experiment from yesterday. I thought the results were interesting enough to share. I set out to see what sort of look I would get if I finished an old prototype of Mt. Rainier with a 90 degree V-bit to get just SOME of the fine details and then another finishing pass with a 1/8” ball nose (Amana tool #46284-k) barely above the v-bit depth. Thoughts? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Looks sort of like scan lines to me ! A mountain in SD . An interlaced mountain ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The material is Precision Board PBLT-15 by @coastalenterprises. Mini Mount Rainier machined from Cocobolo . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Surprisingly, this was my first landscape out of solid wood . The biggest challenge was anticipating the grain cross-sections and where to center the peak. So I just chose the knot in the middle to see what would happen. I was amazed with how well the Cocobolo machined! Especially on the dark side. Should I finish it or keep it as is? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The machine (from @freedomcnc) has a feature called “G51 Look ahead”. This is some extra post-processing that the controller does in real-time to interpolate (smooth) the toolpaths. I usually crank it up to .006” from .001” to speed up my jobs but discovered I may have lost some fine detail on such a small piece with such a small tool. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For this job I used an Amana Tool 1/8” Spektra flat end at 80 IPM (46292-K) to rough it out. The same one I’ve been using for 9 months . And for the first time, I used an Amana Tool Zirconium Nitrate coated 1/32” tapered ball end (#46280) to finish at 100 IPM. The entire operation took 4 hours.
