Everyone's favorite walruses, the Arctic Building (1916), designed by Augustus Gould along with George Lawton, was the first building in Seattle to use colored terra cotta. Gould was an East Coast architect, and brought with him knowledge of east coast building techniques. Built for the Arctic Club, the building housed club rooms and private guest rooms for the members. The grand feature of the building was the 60x60 feet stained glass domed dining room, which still exists today. The City of Seattle occupied the building for many years until selling it to a Spokane developer in 2006.
While many of you know this as a favorite Instagram spot (I had to wait out some other people for my shot), and it's been done a hundred different ways, I felt the need to add it to my collection. The old garage we use to get this shot is not long for this world. A 1000 foot tower is currently in the planning/permitting stage to replace the old garage (in itself not a bad thing) and, if built, this view will be gone forever. #seattlearchitectureminute
A detail of the polychrome Beaux-Arts style Arctic Club (1916) on Cherry Street by Augustus Warren Gould showing the colorful terracotta walrus cartouches on the third floor of the facade. The club was founded by men who had struck it rich in the Klondike Gold Rush and it became a kind of fraternity for these adventurous business men with Alaska or gold rush connections. The building pioneered the use of light glazed terracotta panels over a reinforced concrete or structural steel frame and originally there was also a terracotta polar bear head over the entrance! | photo courtesy of Adrian Taylor, @hydeparkmouldings hydeparkmouldings #seattle #arcticclub #arcticclubseattle #arcticbuilding #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #cartouche #terracotta
