This slate point is tougher than it looks.  I decided to try making an extra thin slate arrowhead with the goal of getting the sharpest edges possible; and expected it to fail.  Everything else being equal, the thinner an edge is, the sharper it will be; but there is a point of diminishing returns where it becomes too delicate. I was playing around in the margins today and ended up being pleasantly surprised.  Instead of putting notches in the sides of this one, I used a bow drill with a nail in the end to put a hole in the center of the point; similar to what I noticed on the AH1 arrowheads from @eseeknives (#eseearrowheads) This was partly because it’s really fun putting holes in rocks, and partly because it seemed like securing a thin point in the center rather than grinding it down on the sides might result in it being stronger; but I’m really just speculating there. It got sharp enough that sharpening one side put a slice into my finger while I sharpened the other. I set it into a tapered dogwood foreshaft and secured it with pitch glue and stinging nettle fibers through the center hole.  I put the partially cut up chicken from my slate ulu test (#groundslateulu) to good use and put the point through it twice and was happy to see that it made it through meat and bone with zero damage. Another great example of Native American craftsmanship. If you want to find arrowheads, do some research on your area and keep your eyes to the ground. I found zero in 30+ years. Can’t imagine what I’d have if I started looking earlier.
