Book of the week 2/3 Some more spreads and again the article Joachim Brohm / Typology 1979 In „Typology 1979“ Joachim Brohm presents a series of pictures showing „Schrebergärten“ (allotment gardens) around the Ruhr in West Germany. As already indicated in the title, he uses a Becher-like formalism for his theme, always focussing on the housing structures of these gardens in the center of his square pictures. Due to this formalism, he draws the viewer‘s attention to the endless details that can be found in these gardens and especially in the architectural structures. Since reading Robert Venruri's "Learning from Las Vegas" a couple of years ago, I always have to think of symbolism in architecture and the representativeness of these symbols as I walk through allotment gardens. The small houses in the pictures are basically garden huts for storing equipment and may have a small place to sit, but they have been enhanced by all these little decorations like curtains, a small canopy or dormer windows – all to symbolize the meaning of these houses, which goes far beyond their profound Use. The fact that the allotments in Germany in 1979, when this work was created, were mainly used by the working class and the lower middle class, gives a good indication of the dreams and desires of these social layers on the basis of the symbols found. What remains inaccessible in real life is realized here as a representative in the ratio of one to two. The book impresses with an excellent production, nice details and a simple design, which always shows one of the 35 pictures on the right side of the spread. Conclusion: A well-made book with one of Joachim Brohm's early works, which is clearly influenced by the Becher School and gives an interesting insight into the German culture of the "Schrebergärten" and beyond, to the symbolized dreams of the working class of the 70s.
