Looking out enjoying the view my wonderful job give me! It might be the last flight of the year yesterday and I enjoyed a lot because if so my next flight (as a pilot) will be in February! some post ago I talked about the Japanese aircraft "zero". Now it is time to talk about another great piece of aviation's history! . In the annals of World War II, one of the most famous airplanes is the British-developed Supermarine Spitfire, an agile, elliptical-wing fighter that has become synonymous with the Royal Air Force victory in the Battle of Britain against Germany. Thanks in large measure to news reports coming out of that battle, the Spitfire captured the imagination of a generation of English and American schoolboys after decades the end of the war. (Mine too‍♂️) . ⚠️Do you know why has it been developed with an elliptical wing? . An elliptical lift distribution provides the least amount of induced drag for a given span. Usually, designers do not use elliptical planforms as the difficulty in manufacture is not worth the small reduction in induced drag. The reason for the elliptical wing is to provide more space, to accommodate landing gear and armaments. . I would like to fly on one of those! Negli anni della seconda guerra mondiale, uno degli aeroplani più famosi fù il Supermarine Spitfire, sviluppato in Gran Bretagna, era un aereo agile e con ala ellittica che è diventato sinonimo della vittoria della Royal Air Force nella battaglia d'Inghilterra contro la Germania Grazie in larga misura alle notizie che uscirono da quella battaglia, gli Spitfire catturarono l'immaginazione di una generazione di scolari inglesi e americani anche decenni dopo la fine della guerra. (Ed anche la mia ‍♂️) . ⚠️Sapete perché è stato sviluppato con un'ala ellittica? . La distribuzione della portanza su ala ellittica assicura la minima resistenza indotta per una data apertura alare. Solitamente, i progettisti non usano ali ellittiche poiché la difficoltà di fabbricazione non vale il guadagno di riduzione della resistenza indotta. l'ala dello Spitfire è di tipo ellittico per fornire più spazio agli armamenti ed al carrello di atterraggio. .
