Often in training people are so eager to move straight onto the end result rather than train at the speed their dog needs.
This may not look like much - a cocker on a loose lead. However there’s lots to consider.
A) breed. Working Cocker; “They are small but strong and robust, with high hunting and retrieving instincts.
For their size they can lift heavy objects larger than their own size, jump high fences and hedges easily and run fast.” << none of these qualities mean lead walking is going to come naturally for this dog. Are you considering what your dog has been bred to do when training?
B) environment. Walking on grass may not seem like a big deal for us humans, but it’s a massive deal for this dog. We have had to work really hard in getting the foundations right walking on pavements and other boring surfaces before attempting grass. The difference was day and night initially - those instead working instincts are kicking in as soon as the environment changes. Are you considering environment when training?
C) distractions. Comes closely linked to environment. What is happening around you whilst you’re trying to train? Around this dog there were minimal distractions. No other dogs, no children, minimal traffic, no potential game to hunt, little wind to carry scent. Are you considering potential distractions?
I guess what I’m getting at is that we always want to set our dog, and ourselves, up to succeed during training sessions. Had this dog been in a field surrounded by pheasants, it would have been a different picture at this stage of his training (training doesn’t stop at the end of a 7 week puppy class). It’s great to have end goals, but make sure you’re nailing those foundations before rushing into the next stage.
Remember what happened to the house built on sand? .
