I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — the idea that dancers, especially ballet dancers, need to be thin is complete BULLSHIT ♀️ While some of the dance world is starting to be more welcoming of varying body types, the ballet world is still extremely exclusive. Even prominent professional ballet dancers often make public comments about how ballet dancers need to be thin or they have no chance at dancing professionally (I’m looking at you @kathryn_morgan ) People say it’s because ballet is an aesthetic art, but that just shows how much fatphobia rules our world and the dance world. The idea that only a thin ballet dancer could be aesthetically pleasing is atrocious. Someone’s body size, weight, or body type doesn’t determine their talent, artistry, or technique level.
These kinds of ideals were a contributor to my eating disorder. People claim that if dancers are training several hours a week and eating well, they will automatically become thin. This simply isn’t true. Even when I was training 15+ hours a week, with about half of those hours being in ballet, the only way my body became and remained thin was through my eating disorder. My body is naturally large. No matter how frequently I’m training, if I’m adequately fueling my body, it will never be thin.
Yes, some dancers are naturally thin, however, not all are, and the idea that dancers must be thin to pursue a professional ballet career is damaging. Sure, there are dancers like Misty Copeland who have bodies slightly different than the “typical” ballet body, but she is still very thin. The dance world, especially the ballet world, really needs to reframe the way they talk about and treat bodies. People of all body types and sizes and weights are capable of being incredibly talented dancers, and discounting someone’s ability simply because of their body size is just not right.
I’m passionate about my #BopoBallerina movement because as a young dancer, and still today, I didn’t see professional dancers who looked like me.
Comment below if you’re also passionate about changing the ballet world’s views on bodies
It’s all started 3 years ago when my teacher gave me as a gift my first Gaynor Minden pointe shoe. It was very comfortable as that age to me and still it is Because I had a lots of problems with the other pointe shoes, first of all I literally broke my pointe shoes in a week but since I wear Gaynor Minden’s hard shank pointe shoes I can used them for a very long time And it’s really great I can wash them when my pointes get dirty Also Gaynor Pointe Shoes have many options for boxes, length, heels... Since I use Gaynor Pointe’s I nearly had any blisters at all❤️ I’ll would be very happy if I gonna be Gaynor Girl this year. And special thanks to @icathala and @pointstoreistanbul who advise me Sculpted Model It’s more comfortable now for me •••••••••••••••••••••••••••• @gaynorminden @gaynorminden_europe @gaynorgirls #gaynorgirlsearch2019 #gaynorminden #gaynorgirls #ballerinas #ballet
Afternoon everyone, new piece in progress. If I’m completely honest I’m not 100% sure where I’m going with it, but only time will tell... I guess you could say that I’ve been inspired by my daughter’s manic couple of months of ballet shows, exams & auditions, it’s definitely been on my mind! However I feel that there may well be a twist to come with this piece and greenery will find it’s way in... #wip #wipwednesday #stitchedart #artprocess #artprogress #ballerinas #ballet #embroidery #naiveart #threadart #threadpainting #fibreart #artistsoninstagram #embroiderersofinstagram #stitchersofinstagram #inspired #freehandstitching #handembroidery #britishstitchers #damngoodstitch #bordado #broderie #ricamo #вышивка #刺绣 #textileart #upcycled #dance #thesewingsongbird
