Anderson Destine was born with a large skull defect that extended all the way into his nasal cavity, creating a large sac in his face composed of fluid buildup and some herniation of the brain. Interfering with his normal movements of the head and impeding his vision, Baby Anderson was fighting for his life. A team of Baptist Health South Florida surgeons performed a life-altering procedure that removed the facial defect allowing baby Anderson a second chance at life. Meet Laurie Sargent, Senior Child Life Specialist / Pediatrics at Baptist Children’s Hospital & Miami Cancer Institute. . . “As one of three child life specialists, I work with children and families on the psychosocial aspect of being in the hospital. Generally, patients may be with us for a few days. Children with more serious conditions requiring intensive care or those with cancer, usually stay longer. The cancer experience involves the entire family: parents, siblings and extended family. I am responsible for supporting the patients and their families -- pre, during and post diagnosis. As part of an interdisciplinary team, my charge is to normalize the hospital experience through play, education and support, appropriate to the child’s age and development. One of my most rewarding tasks is introducing the kids to the playroom, a safe place where there are no doctors, nurses or any procedures performed. The room is a healing, emotional and physical part of treatment and becomes part of their normal routine. We provide group art projects, special events and pet therapy, which the kids love, and more. One new Miami Cancer Institute event, "Parents Night Out" was a huge success for both parents and kids. While the parents went out, we hosted an evening of activities for patients and siblings. One young girl said to me, "Did you see how sparkly my mother looks tonight?" It will always be a memory. I learn something new from the kids each day, even after 29 years.
