A clip of a beautiful female basking shark from today. A few things to notice: 1. The pink of the gill filaments within the gill arch. 2. The shark feeding, then swallowing (looks like chewing) 3. Numerous lamprey scars on the dorsal body just behind dorsal fin 4. Copeopod parasites on the tail stock 5. The two biggest fish in the ocean and both whom are filter feeders! Hundreds of thousands of whale sharks and basking sharks are illegally hunted and processed for their fins annually. The shark fin trade is arguably the biggest threat to sharks at this time. Traded on an unimaginable scale and generating vast wealth for those at the top, the fin trade and its attempted regulation, is a complicated and challenging topic. With a crazy 26-73 million sharks are traded worldwide each year! Not surprisingly China and Hong Kong dominate the import market. As the majority of fins imported into Hong Kong are then exported to China, China accounts for approximately 95% of the worldwide trade in shark fins! Shark fins are not equal in value but are divided into a primary and secondary fin set with higher prices paid for the primary set. Dorsal fins from Whale Sharks and Basking Sharks are regarded as TROPHY fins fetching thousands of dollars apiece. All two species; whale shark and basking shark, are protected under CITES Appendix II, meaning that although they are not currently threatened with extinction, "they may become so unless trade is closely controlled," according to the CITES website. Rare basking sharks have been visiting #ChannelIslands National Marine Sanctuary! ⛴️ To learn more about these gentle giants, sanctuary researchers have been working with @noaafisheries to tag basking sharks in the Santa Barbara Channel. Scientists currently don’t understand how changes in environmental conditions may impact basking sharks, or even where the North Pacific population goes when they’re not along the West Coast. Do they swim to Japan? To Ecuador? Do they stay on the surface or do they forage at deeper depths? Our scientists are hoping to answer these questions, and more, with the help of satellite tags. . Scientists commission a professional harpoonist, to tag sharks. The tag, is attached to the shark’s dorsal fin like an earring and is programmed to pop off after a year. During its time with the shark the device records light, depth, and temperature levels.
