In 2006 I collaborated with @camillawithlove and UNIFEM to produce a book of inspiring women called ‘Women of the World’. This time I turned to some very talented friends of mine who are based out of Newcastle, the town I grew up in. Gillian Bencke is a designer of wearable art BENKE @bencke Gillian, whilst living in Paris started rescuing off-cut materials from the fashion district and hand making one-off dolls based on characters from the fairytales of our childhood. Marvelling at Gillian’s dolls, I decided to portray her as a living doll, surrounded by her strange creations. The makeup is partly body paint, shaping her features into a doll by @leeby_sotheren Since Gillian is a really old friend of mine, she let me suspended her by balancing on a plank of wood I'd poked through a hole in the backdrop. It was pretty hilarious, it was like a seesaw, with a stepladder in the middle and the other end of the plank wired to a milk crate filled with heavy art books as a counterweight. I did tape a pillow to her end, but I did hear she couldn't walk straight for a few days (with her dark sense of humour). We carefully pinned the dolls to the backdrop and their display is reminiscent of her exhibitions. Each doll is intricately crafted by Gillian using antique fabrics, beads, buttons and needlework. #benke #alexiasinclair #womenoftheworld #camillawithlove #fashion #doll #needlework
