5 Warning Signs You are Reading a Fake Ad! Part 2. Firstly, what is a fake ad? ⠀ An ad for a vehicle that doesn’t exist and serves as a fat online bait to lure you to a car yard. Think of a Flying Dutchman, a ghost car: it is surfing the Internet but never reaches a car yard. ⠀ An ad for a vehicle that does exist but it has a serious problem such as a clocked back mileage or a bad auction grade. ⠀ Here’s my selection of 5 warning signs for you: ⠀ There is no VIN number on the ad or VIN number is too short or the sequence of numbers is just silly — 123456 or 456456, etc. It means a seller is hiding a serious problem with a car and trying to avoid Japanese history check just like my cat avoids a mandarine peel. ⠀ There is no picture of Export Certificate (or “dereg paper”) on the ad so you can't do any checks of the VIN and mileage. ⠀ Inconsistency in pictures: sunroofs on one pictures and no sunroofs on others, different floor mats, etc. ⠀ Discrepancy between text and pictures — ad copy lists options that are not visible in pictures. ⠀ And this is my favourite one: If a seller advertises a few cars of the same model/year all around 50,000km and cheap ⤵️ ⠀ Low mileage cars are VERY EXPENSIVE at the auctions in Japan. When a car with low kms shows up, everyone bids on it and that pushes the price up. They are also not that common after a certain number of years. ⠀ So, if you see a seller that puts up a number of Elgrands or Estimas all with around 50,000km on the clock — Houston, we have a problem. They are either clocked back or those are ads of non existent cars designed for you to take a bait and arrive to a car yard, where they'll BS you to death (No, really! Did you miss me? ⠀ I came back in one piece but slightly heavier than before ⠀ Got annoying virus on the day of the flight and suffered all alone in a three seat row for 11 hours, the whole way to Seoul… with all other seats on the plane taken (thank you so much for your prayers and warm wishes!). ⠀ Overnight I got to stay at a classy Park Hyatt (Korean Air’s courtesy) in Seoul for FREE and indulged in their buffet shamelessly.. Because I was sick and needed comfort food, ok? And lots of it. ⠀ Upon arrival I was immediately cured by my sister’s gentle hugs. The sight of 0.5L tub of fresh red caviar helped too. I honestly planned to stick to a boring quinoa with roasted veggies during the trip, but you already know this didn’t happen ⠀ It was all about unhealthy staff: coffee and cakes, tea and caviar (BTW, you do not put caviar in your tea! You take good bread, spread it with bit of good butter and put fish eggs on top... Slightly sweet tea and salted caviar work magically together, trust me on this one). ⠀ While in Russia, I travelled extensively both in the cities and between. Despite quite a few Korean and European cars on the roads, Russian Far East stays predominantly “Japanese” – some cars are JDM imports, some are brand new. ⠀ There are lot more JDM people movers this time, mainly 2,4L Alpahrds and smaller vans such as Toyota Voxy and Nissan Sienna and heaps of very cute kei cars in 5 and 7 seats. ⠀ The roads are a good mix. They are really good in Vladivostok, not so good in smaller towns and a pain in between. The traffic is sooo chaotic with drivers dodging each other and road holes.
