Today something life changing happened. I’ve always known that God is good and Jesus is real, but God really really is so good and Jesus is so real. Today my husband answered a calling to be baptized in Jesus’ name and accept our gracious and loving Savior as his Lord. God can really do anything and Jesus is always the answer. I have received so many amazing testimonials from all platforms, especially after the summary video I shared last night. Since we started the posts on When They See Us, people have been asking “How can we move on from such hurt?” How does one begin to recover from such level of injustice just like “The Central Park Five” or the many injustices suffered even in our country Nigeria? How do you escort your friend to a police station just to be there for him and end up being beaten up and asked to confess to a crime that you were not even a suspect for? This was the very pitiful plight of Kory Wise. The other 4 black boys were also framed for what they didn’t do. How do you start believing in a system that has failed you time and time again? Try to step into their mothers’ shoes, and you may experience some palpitations. Imagine the decisions they had to make to protect their sons. E.g Yusef’s mother making the decision not to let Yusef write letters to Kory who was in isolation. How did both moms and their sons move on from that hurt and become close again? This right here is the reality of our daily challenges. Parents need to help their children stop being naïve about the world around them, we need to build their emotional and mental resilience and immunity and get them to focus on being the BEST that they can be BUT all these can only begin with knowing who you are and embracing your IDENTITY. WTSU gives you an opportunity to teach your children about Racism, Injustice, Identity, Life, Responsibility, Faith, Hope, Destiny, Confidence, Time and Timeliness, Forgiveness, Identity, Relationships and Love It will also teach them why they should choose their friends based on the quality of their characters only, why they should respect everyone even if they don’t agree with them. It’s time to start having those seemingly difficult conversations with our children. It’s time to let go of all the unforgiveness, betrayal and hurt you’ve been holding on to for too long. A friend of mine took my advice and watched When They See Us with her two children. Even though they were scarred, angry and enraged as they watched, it gave mother and children the perfect opportunity to have these difficult conversations “I needed to start watering the ground for more conversations and questions I know they will have in future” she said to me According to her, she learnt the following lessons from the series and the subsequent interview the grown exonerated 5 men (Kevin Richardson, Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Antron McCray ) had with Oprah Winfrey : 1.
