Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter and Beyoncé, photographed with their GLAAD “Vanguard Award” backstage at the advocacy group’s 30th annual Media Awards at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Thursday evening. The music mogul is wearing a custom pale pink tuxedo jacket, tuxedo shirt and pants made by his tailor Davidson Petit-Frère under his new FRÈRE label.
Before The Carters were introduced, RuPaul’s Drag Race veteran Shangela performed a seven-and-a-half-minute medley of Beyoncé songs, electrifying the crowd with “I Was Here,” “Partition,” “***Flawless,” “Baby Boy,” “Bootylicious” and “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” Bey had only greenlit the performance on Monday, so the routine was even more impressive. The couple gave her a standing ovation; and after the show they invited her to their suite at the hotel for a private introduction.
Hov and Beyoncé were introduced and honored by “Family Feud” founding mother Janet Mock (thanking Jay from the podium for making trans people were represented in his and Ava DuVernay’s short film), stylist Ty Hunter, screenwriter and producer Lena Waithe and HIV activist Morris Singletary.
A close friend of Bey since 1999, Hunter said the couple was not in the fight for equal rights “for attention, [but] they are here because they believe in acceptance.” Hunter thanked the Queen for teaching him never to compare himself to anyone else, and in an emotional moment, thanked Jay for being a straight man “comfortable in his damn skin” who accepted him, and “lets other straight men know that this is the way to go.” Continued below.
