“The London Marathon replaces water bottles with eco-friendly, seaweed-based edible packages. Organisers hope to reduce number of plastic bottles on course by more than 215,000. The aftermath of the marathon is usually a sea of plastic waste as thirsty runners attempt to stay hydrated by drinking from then discarding bottles of water as they go, creating enormous amounts of plastic waste. The pouches, made by London-based startup Skipping Rocks Lab, were made using a thin natural seaweed membrane. The Ooho! capsules can be bitten to release the liquid inside and the cover can also be swallowed. This is what Dutch #designers Laura and Ilfa are exploring through a ‘‪Living Colour‬’ biodesign research project, focusing on #bacteria that produces pigment and investigating most favourable conditions for their growth (like the exposure to high sound frequencies, for instance). ___ What are the benefits? Attendees of The Brits this year will receive one of our most exciting packaging innovations to date. Our Rosehip + Seaweed Suspension 3.5% is encased in mycelium, a natural and fully compostable fibre created using mushrooms. Packaging of skincare uses too much single use plastic and non-recyclable elements. Our products are carried in UV resistant amber glass which enables us to recycle them easily. This case protects the glass from breakages whilst also removing excessive use of card, plastic and fill that we see too often. We’ll continue to incorporate mycelium in our products and stores with an aim that our footprint on the earth is a positive one.
