This is the classroom where I teach on a regular basis. My students are graduating today (hence the empty classroom ) and I am on my way to be a part of the commencement ceremony wearing my "Harry Potter" outfit. It is so exciting to see my students going into the world to achieve big things...

Zombie pig brains?! ‍♂️⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ A Nature study released yesterday brings new meaning to the @gameofthrones quote, “what is dead may never die.” Yale researchers restored circulation and function in pig brains hours after death. Typically, a few minutes without blood flow irreversibly damages brains (i.e. stroke). However, after 4 hours without oxygen & glucose, researchers were able to preserve function in certain neuronal populations by pumping BrainEx solution through the pig brains . Researchers stress that this is “not a living brain, but it is a cellularly active brain.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Why is it exciting? BrainEx enables the study of large mammalian brains in 3D as opposed to small tissue samples or sections. This could lead to the development of treatments for brain injuries, such as salvaging brain function in stroke patients.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Are these brains alive? ‍♂️ This study ignites ethical debates over the definition of “death.”‪ The Princess Bride‬ taught us “there’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is slightly alive.” However, restoration of consciousness was never the goal of this study; in fact, researchers used anti-seizure drugs to inhibit neural activity. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How do we now define “brain death,” the irreversible loss of brain function that determines eligibility for organ donation? Defining “irreversible” has already challenged physicians and ethicists. BrainEx’s ability to restore neuron activity further complicates the decision between brain resuscitation and organ donation.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Science is more than test tubes, data, and drug development. Research raises immense ethical and policy questions that cannot be answered in a lab. How these Franken-studies will be regulated is a prime example of science policy in action!⁣ #Frankenpigs #notaneuroscientist #itsALIVE #orisit

As a scientist, the Havasupai community is often discussed in terms of scientific ethics. You see, in 1989 researchers from Arizona State University developed a research partnership with the Havasupai to study diabetes. This project included collecting over 400 blood samples to look for links between genes and diabetes risks. After several years of trying, the researchers were not successful in finding a genetic link to Type II diabetes. . . However, the researchers then acted unethically and used the blood samples containing DNA for unrelated studies on schizophrenia, migration, inbreeding and ultimately trying to disprove the tribes own self conception, all which were not what the tribe originally agreed to in the partnership and are taboo topics to the community. A member of the tribe & participant in the diabetes study attended a lecture where she learned the samples were used for these later studies without her consent or the consent of other tribal members. In 2004, the Havasupai tribe filed a lawsuit against ASU & the Arizona Board of Regents for misuse of their DNA samples, violation of medical confidentiality, violation of civil rights, and emotional distress. After a lengthy battle, the tribe was awarded $700,000 (1/100 of what the tribe requested), funds for a clinic and school, and the return of their DNA samples. . . The researcher who committed these unethical acts went on to work at other institutions. The fallout from this case is that many tribal communities distrusted medical research and refused to participate in future research projects (still active today in some communities). It also provoked many Indigenous scholars to challenge what “informed consent” means to vulnerable populations, and question who benefits from participating in research projects. . . As I sat on the banks of this clear blue sacred river, reflecting & drinking my coffee, I thought of this case and how thankful I am to the efforts of Indigenous scholars working to ensure these type of ethical disasters do not occur again, and that the best kind of research is research led & in service to the community. . . I am delighted to announce that I won 1st place in this year's America's Got Regulatory Science Talent Student Competition at the University of Rochester. As the 1st place winner, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. to present my winning regulatory science solution "My RWD (Real World Data)" this afternoon at the FDA. If you missed my live presentation (which was at 2:30pm), you can watch a recording of the entire event by following the link provided below. I spoke on the issue of data privacy in the era of Big Data and presented a simple process to provide individuals increased autonomy over their mobile health data. I have worked so hard on my project and presentation and I am extremely proud to be representing the University of Rochester and speaking publicly on what I believe are some of the greatest bioethics issues we face in regards to emerging data-sharing technologies in health care. Coffee and Glover. || I finished The 7 Deadly Sins of Psychology, which was great. I'm writing a proper review, which'll be on Goodreads soon. Now I decided to read this work by Glover that is based on his 2004 lecture at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics. Before I say more about it: I (re-)made a Twitter account that I'll start using for mostly academic purposes—during my PhD period and beyond. If you're interested in getting updates, then feel free to follow me @srkraaijeveld. Okay, now about the book: Progress in genetics and reproductive technologies give us ever-growing power to reduce the incidence of disabilities and disorders. Should we welcome this power or should we fear its implications? This is the central question is confronts. More specifically, Glover tackles the following cases: 1) Should a deaf couple be free to determine that their offspring cannot hear? 2) Ought parents be allowed to choose the color of their children's hair? 3) Is it ethical to 'design' people who are more intelligent, or better-looking? Is a part of human nature that should be protected from the consequences of genetic choices/human manipulation? Are there parts that should be eradicated? As a Bachelor student I took several linguistics courses, one of which was on language contact and change. We had a deaf person come in to speak to us, and we read a book that had a very strong impact on me, namely Harlan Lane's The Mask of Benevolence: Disabling the Deaf Community. It made me realize that deaf people have their own language and their own culture, fully formed and not inferior to that of hearing people, and that many deaf people cherish their language and culture and would not want to give them up. Therefore, we hearing people, and more generally non-disabled people, have to be very careful not to assume that any kind of disability necessarily ought to be removed. I mean, how do you explain to a person with Down's syndrome that you support screening to make sure that no one (else) is born with Down's syndrome? It's like saying that they should not exist. Big questions, most likely controversial answers—let's see what Glover has to say.

It’s me, in PhD mode! Here is an update since it is harder to post about academia than arts: -I’m in year 3 so I’ve almost advanced to candidacy, which basically means I can apply for dissertation level funding -This year, I was awarded a fellowship where I work part-time in the graduate division office! It’s tiring but I really like the work and the flexibility and my “coworkers” -Research area is still end of life decision making and pediatric palliative/hospice care...more on that next spring hopefully! -I’m studying Sociology at UCSF * * * * * * * #PhDlife #UCSF #sociology #BlackGirlMagic #academia #research #bioethics #phdstudent #BlackEducation #academia #fellow #PPHC #LMUalumni #ColumbiaAlumni #Nerd #representation #goals #hustle
