A protein found in a squid’s arms with unusual properties could be used to produce a sustainable material that is elastic, flexible and strong.
The Squid Ring Teeth (SRT) protein, naturally occurring in squids, can be made in the lab using a fermentation-like process using sugars, water and oxygen. The bio-inspired polymer that results can be used as an abrasion-resistant coating for clothing to reduce microfiber erosion in washing machines, which is a major cause of plastic microfiber pollution.
The SRT protein is also ‘self-healing’, meaning that clothes could self-repair tiny damages.
Scientists from Penn State University believe that ‘squid ring-teeth based materials are an excellent alternative to plastics because they are eco-friendly and environmentally sustainable’.
