✨ BIRTHMARK✨For as long as I can remember I was always finding ways to cover my birthmark. Something that I was born with, everyday I hated myself for it, every day I wanted to get rid of it. I wanted to try even knowing that I would have lost my eyesight if I had removed it. Everyday I felt like I wasn’t good enough, I felt like why me? The pain and the bullying I went through, only I’ll know and I carry it with me through my life. I used to cry and cry till there were no tears left, but now I’ve realised at the age of 23 that I’m not different, I am enough. I was blessed with something that helped me find my purpose in life. I found my passion through learning a new art and it wound up being one of the biggest lessons. Often I wonder if I had seen images like these when I was younger, I would have started to accept myself and the way I look much sooner, but at 12 or 13 I didn’t have Instagram, body positivity and celebrating differences weren’t concepts people talked about like they do now. By posing for and uploading images like these, we are both helping ourselves to own and love our differences personally, and to hopefully let today’s young people and families affected by CMN or other visual differences to love and accept their skin. Nobody should feel they have to hide or cover themselves up. Charlie's Sweet Cheek Update!⠀ ⠀ We haven't needed/had a follow-up with the dermatologist in a while, and today we went! Now that the hemangioma seems to be as involuted as it is going to be (AKA, no significant bulking left- just minor discoloration), it's time to start talking next steps if any.⠀ ⠀ I know a lot of you are interested in those updates, so I wanted to share! At this point, we are checking with insurance and doing everything to get ready to start laser treatments as recommended by her dermatologist at Emory (who's one of the highest recommended pediatric vascular birthmark specialists in the country). ⠀ ⠀ The laser will just be on the red parts and we will go every six weeks or so for several months if everything goes well. We will start by seeing if she handles it well with just me holding her and numbing cream. If she doesn't, she will be sedated for subsequent treatments. The sessions are about 30 minutes. ⠀ ⠀ There's a lot to consider and weigh, but this is what we are doing at this point after talking to her doctors. We will follow up once more with ophthalmology to make sure all is well with her eye muscles, too. ❤️⠀ ⠀ *every hemangioma, child, and treatment plan is unique, this is simply our experience.*
