One of my life principles is ‘don’t complain about things you’re not willing to help fix.’ But I have to confess lately I haven’t been following that policy. I’ve been slightly bitter about the “lack of representation” (though I feel that phrase has sometimes been misused to diminish what it really means to be inclusive) & disappointed with the lack of reality being depicted in books & on screens. While there’s been some steps forward, I’m sure we can agree that there isn’t nearly enough. . Those who don’t fit Hollywood’s “ideal” have been typecast; there’s not a lot of room at the top for more POC/WOC; specifically black women. And as much as I love the amazing young actors we think of first when we say black, a lot of them are mixed with loose curls. No, I don’t want to “cancel” them (because they’re extremely talented & advocate on other black women’s behalf), but simply include MORE types of black girls. . So I’ve decided to step up. I’m working on my first full-length novel starring black women & POCs who are well-rounded, thought-provoking, passionate & filled with flaws. But today I realized I don’t want to wait until it’s done. . Starting my Youtube channel again helped give me a vocal outlet for my creativity but I feel like for my writings I haven’t taken that step yet. So I decided to start sharing my short stories on Amazon. Instead of waiting for my novel, I would like to give you all a taste of my unique writing style through short stories I will be releasing weekly with POC in non-stereotypical and/or leading roles. . HERE’S HOW IT WILL WORK: I’ll post the first page of each story here & if you’re interested you would pay $1 for the rest of the story on my Amazon page. .
