One of the most productive Chalazion I’ve ever seen Chalazion is a chronic sterile #granuloma residing within the eyelid that originates from an obstructed meibomian gland of the tarsal plates. If acute secondary infection takes place, the lesion is known as hordeolum. They are typically located in the middle of the eyelid, red, and non painful. Risk factors are #blepharitis, #rosacea, prior chalazion, uncorrected #refractive errors, uncontrolled #diabetes and long hours of work on #computers . Small, asymptomatic #chalazion can be left untreated. Conservative #treatment including lid massage, warm #compression and #steroid / antibiotic eyedrops can also be used. Surgical treatment may be considered in case of unresolved chalazion or large and symptomatic chalazion. Hordeolum vs Chalazion: Hordeolum is an infectious stye (tender, often painful bump on the eyelid), whereas Chalazion is an inflammatory stye (hard bump on the eyelid). Unfortunately they can co-exist. There a few different routes of treatment: 1) at-home therapy with omega-3, warm compresses, and eyelid cleansers, 2) pharmaceuticals with topical and/or oral antibiotics/anti-inflammatory medications, 3) surgical with steroid injection or excision, & 4) light therapy (IPL) and/or heat therapy (iLux). Clients are generally older and have a long history of ocular symptoms. Seborrhea blepharitis is not an infection, but is caused by improper function of the oil glands, causing greasy, waxy scales to accumulate along the lashline. Seborrhea blepharitis may be a part of an overall skin disorder that affects other areas of the body. Hormones, nutrition, general physical condition and stress are factors in seborrhea. Clients usually have seborrhea dermatitis (dandruff of the scalp) as well. Clients should cleanse lashes daily with warm water and a cleanser with tea tree oil to soothe and kill bacteria.
