Kentucky earned the nickname "Bluegrass State" because of its many pastures filled with bluegrass which thrives in the fertile Kentucky soil. Lexington, Louisville, and Frankfort are all part of the Bluegrass Region of central Kentucky. The abundant limestone throughout the region contributes to beautiful grass, good bourbon, and champion horses. The Bluegrass Region has more than 450 horse farms.

Though Civil War battles were fought on Kentucky soil, the Commonwealth's official position was neutrality.

The state animal for Kentucky is, of course, the Horse. Their insect is the Honey Bee, and tree is the Tulip Poplar. The official state song is "My Old Kentucky Home," composed in 1852. The song's first verse and chorus are always recited annually at the Kentucky Derby. #southernreverie
