It's throwback Thursday!
Repost via @wickedstitchessc: "This was completed for a customer to match their original interior on a 74 Malibu Ski boat. We picked out an exact match and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. Stop by or give us a call to see what we can do for you.

Day 9, skin-on-frame row/sail canoe. 4 hrs.

It always seems like the finished hull should be more than half the battle but whenever you get strings and sails and metal bits and oars involved, it’s actually only about 1/3rd of the overall cost and work. Even if you’re a hard core minimalist like I am, all those bits and bobs take quite a bit of fiddling (and fumbling) to get set up right. this is one of those places where skin on frame starts to lose some of its big advantages (cost, weight, building speed) because whether you’re building a plywood boat, a traditional wooden boat, or a skin on frame boat all these parts are the same.
.
Today I scrubbed the rust off of my saw and started on seats, floorboards, and foils. I changed my mind and decided to go with regular plank thwarts to help stiffen the frame but also because the way I set up the rowing stations each seat makes a perfect footbrace for the next rowing position, which is handy! This is what I love about designing my own boats, it lets me fix all the niggling details that can make a big difference in the overall useability of the craft. .
Right now the boat weighs 40lbs, and I’m going to do my best to keep the finished weight below 55. The idea here is that the whole package with rig and oars weighs less than 70lbs, so you can enjoyably pop it on and off a roof rack. I really like to leave boats set up, oars and rig tied and left in the boat. It makes for a civilized, quick outing which makes for a boat that gets used a lot more often. Getting that whole package down to cartop weight is a challenge though, which is why most ‘cartoppable’ boats, aren’t.
