I was first introduced to #lisasee 's writing through THE TEA GIRL OF HUMMINGBIRD LANE, which was one of my favourite books read in 2017. So imagine my delight and anticipation when I was granted an ARC of her latest book #theislandofseawomen from Edelweiss! . . I admit that I knew very little (i.e. nothing) of Jeju’s history, the little Korean island that is home to our two main characters. In the 1930s, when Mi-ja and Young-sook were little girls, the island was quite unique for its matriarchic society. It fell to the women to provide an income through diving, whilst the men raised the children, did the housework and tended to the gardens. Young-sook’s mother was one of the head “haenyeo” on the island, teaching the younger women to dive - how to hold their breaths, how to read the ocean and how to stay alive in this dangerous occupation. “A woman is not meant for the household!” she said to her daughter. It’s a fascinating culture and much too complex to explain here, but See does a great job in making her haenyeo characters come to life. . . We meet Mi-ja and Young-sook when they are mere “baby divers” starting out on their journey, and accompany them through their whole lives into old age. And what tragic, heartbreaking lives they lived! I had no idea of the terrible history of the island when I started reading this book. . . This was a bit of a mixed read for me, as it often read like a hybrid between fiction and a history textbook, and I didn't feel the deep connection with the characters that I longed for. But I definitely learned a lot! If you like historical fiction and learning about different cultures, then you should definitely pick this one up!

Last year my new years resolution was to read more books. I didn’t quite make my goal of reading a book every two weeks, but I managed 20 books in the year and I discovered some new authors and books that I really love. I can never understand how people read hundreds of books in a year. Maybe I’m just a slow reader. I’m trying to get back into the habit of reading regularly again this year. I’ve just started reading Brighton Rock, I was so absorbed reading it I almost missed my stop on the tube. Are you reading anything at the moment? Wow – what a hell of a ride this book was! It was also so much fun to read. Which makes me a little bit concerned about my own sanity, seeing how there were some pretty dark themes at play here: murder, torture, sexual predators, lies and infidelity. But, oh so very entertaining! On the surface, Millicent and her husband are just an ordinary suburban married couple. Millicent sells real estate, whilst her husband gives tennis lessons to the rich bored housewives in the area. They come home at night, cook dinner, help the kids with their homework and ferry them around to their various sporting activities. But at night when the kids are asleep, the couple meet for “date nights” in the garage where they pursue their own interests. Pretty normal, huh? Except that this is not stamp collecting, gardening or tinkering in the shed. Because Millicent and her husband are the sort of couple who like a thrill, and nothing makes them more excited than .... . . YOU WILL HAVE TO GET THIS BOOK TO FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF! . . Macabre, shocking, twisted but unputdownable are the words that instantly spring to mind, and yet I think it will also appeal to readers who like a lighter mystery, as it doesn’t dwell on the serious and the gory. By far one of the more original books I have read in a long time, and one that I can highly recommend to all lovers of the genre! . . I'm really enjoying nonfiction this year. I'm part-way through The Five, the untold lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper. It is a fascinating insight into the lives, and not deaths, of the victims. Rather than focusing on the murderer and the murders, Hallie Rubenhold tells us about the day to day lives of Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Kate and Mary Jane. She dispels the myths that surround these women, and instead tells us about who they were. Their upbringings, families, jobs, children, loves and losses. It's a sobering look back on a past where women had little to no rights, and the poor were treated appallingly. It has a Dickensian feel, and reads almost like fiction in places. If you're interested in history, social studies, women's rights, and of course the lives of the women killed by Jack the Ripper, I highly recommend this book. Oi, galera! ⠀ Desde quando fiz a última resenha que eu estava devendo eu não consegui terminar um livro sequer! Por isso hoje tem mais um #bookchat dessa vez sobre tempo.⠀ ⠀ ⏰Como vocês organizam o tempo de leitura de vocês? ⠀ ⠀ Eu costumo ler antes de dormir, quando estou fora esperando o horário da aula ou de um atendimento e no ônibus. Quando eu trabalhava podia passar meu dia de folga inteiro lendo, mas hoje faço o meu projeto do mestrado em casa, então preciso colocar um limite para não atrapalhar os estudos. ⠀ ⠀ Eu também sou o tipo de pessoa que quando me empolgo com um livro não quero parar. Enquanto algumas pessoas se distraem facilmente da leitura eu corro o risco de esquecer do mundo! (Na rua isso pode ser muito perigoso! ) Então a maior chance é que eu acabe lendo horas seguidas.⠀ ⠀ Mas quando eu não estou gostando muito do livro ou se estou mais a fim de fazer outra coisa (assistir séries, por exemplo) posso passar dias sem ler nada!
