“Everyone’s immortal until they’re not.” - Victoria Schwab . A Gathering of Shadows ☆☆☆☆.5 . . It’s official. I adore this series. I think @bookish.bones said it best. This is the book in the Shades of Magic series where you FALL for the characters, and she’s completely right. I had already fallen for Kell on maybeeee the first page of the first book, but this novel developed new and familiar faces that had me liking them all! Set a couple months after the events in the first book, A Gathering of Shadows follows both Lila and Kell as they strive towards their freedom and in the process, finding themselves. For Lila, she’s set course on the high seas where she meets a pirate who’s not exactly what he seems (and totally one of my new fav characters!). Kell struggles to find balance after the effects of the dark magic that claimed him months before. In the meantime, there’s a magical tournament being held, where all the magicians from all over the world come to compete and show off their skills. Definitely not the place for any novice magician or a prince. Similar to the previous book, the first half of this novel sets up new characters and conflict, so it is more of a slower pace. Once it picks up though, this story really PICKS up. I really loved how Schwab develops everything, from the characters, to the magic system, to the world. The attention to detail is amazing. The characters continue to grow in complexity with complicated relationships and struggles. I personally loved how a snarky friendship, turned into flirtatious, witty banter and then a slow burn romance that whew...I was super excited about.☺️ Just a warning, make sure to have the third one ready to go because this ending had me on pins and needles and my head spinning with shock! . Even upon picking it up, I didn’t even know the synopsis so I was slightly confused. I based the valuation of the rating on the fact that I just couldn’t overcome the age of the narrator. That’s probably due to my lack of involvement with children. I just found myself being really frustrated. The beginning of the book I found myself super involved and loving the story. The second half fell short for me, which was incredibly disappointing. The story was raw, and maybe it would be different rather I had watched the film instead of read the book. Old Wives’ Lore for Gardeners. . When I saw this adorable little book I just knew I had to have it! Gardening? Yes! Gardening folklore? Double yes!!! . And I’m so glad this little gem is now in my collection! It’s filled with a whole wealth of gardening lore and old wives tales and it’s just perfect! Here are just a few of my favourites: . If you’re having trouble with neighbours cats in your garden, lay a length of the inner tube of a bicycle tyre on the lawn. The cats will think it’s a snake and give the garden a wide berth. . If it moves slowly enough, step on it; if it doesn’t, leave it— it’ll probably kill something else. . One creature you should keep in the garden is a toad. No greenhouse, or cucumber or melon frame, should be without one. It will serve you well by eating noxious insects, so give it a mate that it may not be bored in its captivity. . To get rid of moles sink empty beer bottles in their runs with the necks just protruding, and the wind will make ghostly noises that will terrify them. If you have your whole garden wailing like a coven of banshees it is conceivable they may decide the whole area is haunted and it will get a bad reputation in mole circles for generations to come. . If you spot a spider while it’s spinning its web in your garden it means that someone is plotting against you. . If the sky in rainy weather has a tinge of sea-green the rain will get heavier; if there are patches of deep blue, it will become merely showery. . If you grow an elder bush outside your kitchen window, flies will remain happily outside and not come in. . If an adept, or indeed anyone else, had been turned into a donkey, all that was necessary was to eat roses. Perhaps to this day if a donkey is seen eating roses it should, in charity, be left to do so, and not driven off until it is quite clear that it is ONLY a donkey. .
