“Untitled” (acrylic, spray paint, and oilstick on canvas; 1982) by Jean-Michel Basquiat, from my visit to The Brant Foundation’s current Basquiat exhibition in their East Village space. •
•
This painting was included in the summer 1982 exhibition at Alexander F. Milliken, Inc., New York entitled “Fast”. Ed Baynard, curator of the show, once explained: “I chose the word ‘Fast’ as an umbrella title because ‘Fast’ seems (to me) the opposite of apathy. Fast is passion made concrete.” •
•
I like thinking of Basquiat’s work, and this painting in particular, in that capacity. To me, the end result of a painting like this tells a story about the frenetic energy in which Basquiat would work to expel passionate imagery out of his mind and body onto a composition, finally captured in a concrete stasis.
(Take 2 with his whole face!) Smaller and sleeker than Canada geese, brants migrate here from the Arctic to winter in our comparatively balmy waters and dine on our aquatic plants. This poor traveler came to us from Randalls Island with a host of problems, primarily a bad foot.
