Yesterday I was completely sidelined by a massive migraine. I can normally work through one with enough caffeine and migraine meds but yesterday was different. I am still feeling kind of wiped out from it even this morning, 24 hours later. But while that was seriously no fun, I do think sometimes our bodies have ways of making us listen even if we are trying to ignore stuff. We get so busy, or we make ourselves so busy on purpose so we don't have to deal with things. But then I get a day like yesterday and I have no choice but to stop. It put a lot into perspective. Made me realize there are things I want to give my time and attention to and things I don't. So maybe the migraine was worth it? Maybe you also need to be still for a day and see how you feel about the things and people in your own life.

After all this heat, waking up to the sound of rain this morning was wonderful! And the light filtering through the window was so inspiring I had to force myself to stop taking pictures so I could post one. Practicing will have to wait until a bit later, but I am definitely feeling all the vibes today and I can't wait to dig into some juicy viola pieces. I'm thinking the first movement of the Reger Suite would suit today perfectly! ☔️

JC Bach/Casadesus Viola Concerto in C minor: III. Allegro molto energico
I have never understood why many people classify this piece as a “student concerto”. It is clearly not!
There are difficult shifts, bowings, and it’s not easy to play in tune. But I’m feeling more comfortable after today’s practice session!
What pieces are you currently revisiting or plan to revisit soon? Let me know in the comments! ⬇️
As part of my #100daysofpractice (day 47! ) I've been focusing on technique. And sometimes the best way to do that is to go back to basics. If I am, for example, trying to retrain and strengthen my pinky to stay curved and not collapse, there are a lot of really great etudes in Wohlfahrt l and ll. Sure I could dive into Kreutzer octave exercises or double stops or Flesch (shudder), but how many other things will I be focusing on in addition to my pinky? A lot. If I go back to Wohlfahrt, I can play most of those easily and give all of my focus to my pinky, therefore making faster progress in that area. So to that end, I've started doing 10 Wohlfahrt etudes a day as part of my warm up. I started on etude 1 and played through to 10. The second day I started on 2 and went to 11 etc on and on. I'm using the @rbpviolinist Rachel Barton Pine edition and they go in progressive order, perfect for this. You can add days to the early etudes if you need extra time on them, but what happens is you end up working on each etude past number 10 for ten days! You easily work your way through the book, focusing on what you need to and by the end you are a total Wohlfahrt rock star. I'm doing the same with Kreutzer, just more like 5 a day instead

How to Teach Spiccato!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s a bow stroke that string players need to know how to do, and I find that many students have long term issues with developing a nice spiccato when they were not introduced to it properly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
✔️ Step 1: Play a down bow at the frog & come off the string.
✔️ Step 2: Set the bow.
✔️ Step 3: Play an up bow and come off the string.
✔️ Step 4: Set the bow.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can then start to speed up and the student will find that the bow will naturally want to bounce!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Note: If the student is struggling with finger flexibility or right hand tension, they might not be ready for spiccato.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let me know what you think & if this helps you out!
It really doesn't take a lot to make me happy, so when I realized I have a mute that matches my favorite studio chair, .......happiness goal for the day was achieved
You know, we talk a lot about ways to motivate our students and how fun accessories can do that. I'm a grown adult and this still works on me. ♀️ But seriously, for our students and ourselves, having the right tools in the right environment can make a huge difference! I love having a dedicated space in my home for music. Everything I need is within easy reach. My music cabinets might not be exactly organized yet, but I can usually find what I need -so that counts! Do you have a special music spot? It can be a room or even a corner of a room, whatever you can find that will work. Any time I'm in a practice rut, sometimes changing up my spot works. I personally prefer windows and lots of light (even when I'm working on something dark or sad). So for me, a space with lots of natural light is best. What would you change about your practice environment if you could
