Book 45: Milkman by Anna Burns. Audiobook. In a city of the 1970s, ruled by sectarian violence, Middle Sister finds that she has come to the attention of the district's gossip mongers. She has been seen with an eminent para-military gunman called The Milkman, so obviously she is having an affair with him. In a community where it is best to go unnoticed, attention can be dangerous. Although the city is unnamed, it is quite clearly Belfast of the 1970s, when sectarian violence was at its height. Take note those of you assuming this is a dystopian tale (and I have seen more than a few reviews stating this), this book quite faithfully portrays aspects of the Catholic side of the political troubles in 1970s Northern Ireland. . Milkman won the Man Booker Prize 2018, and has been short-listed for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2019. This was my latest read from the Women's Prize short-list, although I actually ended up listening to the audio book, rather than reading the text copy I had bought. It is beautifully read by the Northern Irish actress Brid Brennan. Quite simply, this audio book is fantastic. The spoken text is rambling, but it picks up up and carries you along, with the lyrical tones of the Northern Irish accent. It just flows over you. Superb. The subject matter is heavy, but there is so much dark humour here that you almost won't notice! Some jaws will drop when I relate how much I laughed at Pinter 4 this afternoon. But laugh I did. Repeatedly! The two one act plays, Moonlight and Night School, show Pinter at his most mischievous.
