Birdcages . There’s no hiding that I’m a huge fan of coaches, and now that my focus has moved to the LBSC/SECR origin lines, The recent Bachman birdcages have commanded a huge portion of my attention recently. . I have an olive green set that has been modified to run with screw links between them, and all the buffers have been replaced with Markits sprung items (which for the price, I was a little disappointed they didn’t come with), but they run beautifully and the connection is close, and it’s great to see it all working on corners! . Being impatient as I am, I wasn’t ready to wait for the malachite releases, I picked up a cheap crimson liveried brake, and I looked into my options for cutting it up and turning it into something different (@mattw_rsguitars87 style) but nothing really suitable jumped out at me, so it ended up green! The transfers are all finished, and it’s had the roof weathered and a panel line wash on the sides, a belt added to the dynamo and the underframe weathered. I’m waiting on more sprung buffers to finish it off completely - then I need to add the other two in the set! . Undoubtedly the UKs rarest proprietary diesel model, for now at least..the infamous ‘marker light’ peak. This one started off as the highly sought after limited edition 45048 produced for Modelzone back in 2004 on the old 8 pin chassis, bizarrely the only time this tooling hit the shops. 45128 was the last peak in regular service, modelled here in it’s early 1987 guise just before it gained the Tinsley painted name ‘Centaur’ and other embellishments such as the Tinsley Headlamps are from Replica Railways. As with most things, weathering really breathes life into a model, and this one especially. It’s dirty, but not filthy, just typical of the period. I’m not always a fan of wiper marks but they do work here. Transfers are from @railtectransfers, which were custom made to order and go on like a dream as usual and were applied with Klear. The whole loco was satin varnished before reassembly and final weathering. So there you go, a faded and grubby late 80s 45/1. 90046 and 90044 headed up the last ever 'Lowlander' Southbound Caledonian Sleeper Service with Mk2/3 coaching stock on Friday night (26/04/19). This was the last time class 90s oparated the ‘Lowlander’ sleeper service as they are not being modified for the new Mk5s. Mk2/3 coaching stock has been on the sleeper service since 1985 and has been through many liveries and franchises from BR to National Express, First Group and now Serco. Each coach tells a story of each of its 4 operators - BR signage, National Express walls with carpet, First Group external livery, Scotrail Saltire lounge seats and seated coach and now Serco adverts throughout the train. I first travelled on the sleeper during it's First Group years back in 2009 on our first family trip to London staying in Kings Cross. The thought of sleeping on a bed traveling at high speeds and waking up in the capital was an amazing thing at the age of 8 and I have been fortunate enough to travel on this hotel on wheels countless times since and have loved it every time.
