Staying up super late to photograph the stars is always worth the lost sleep for me. It’s a magical time to be in nature, which evokes, ‘kid on Christmas morning’ feelings.

The stillness of the night brings heightened awareness to the senses, while the rugged terrain keeps me focused. A few test shots later, and the compositions begins to unfold. The childish joy that is brought on from a quick look at my camera’s LCD can’t be replicated any other way. What modern technology is capable of is mind boggling! A small piece of our beautiful galaxy is being displayed in more ways than the naked eye can comprehend! This is simply out of this world!
Capturing the setting sun just as it descends below the horizon. Watching this moment reminded me of the James Taylor lyric to his song, Close Your Eyes.
-
”Well the sun is surely sinking down
But the moon is slowly rising
And this old world must still be spinning ‘round
And I still love you”
- James Taylor - Close Your Eyes
Moments like these aren’t common place. Obviously the more I get in nature, the better chances I have of witnesses such beauty. I was in the Bruce Peninsula National Park, when the cosmos revealed themselves, reassuring my love for the nights sky.

I was on a solo hiking trip, it was late (about 1am), and all the other backpackers were fast asleep in the comfort of their tents. The stars were out, shining their brilliance over the rocky landscape. The gentle splashing of the water against the rocks broke the silence of night. I had my camera in hand, hoping to capture a bit of the magnificent clear sky, and landscape around. Clearly taking photographs in the dark have their own challenges, but with modern tools, knowledge, and some skills I was able to create some of my favourite images to date. This one in particular makes me smile.

Does anyone else enjoy star gazing?
