Forgot to share a picture of one of my favorite treasures from my time down in Colombia earlier this Spring. This little tiny roll (1.9cm diameter) was made by one of the engraving teachers @eaosantodomingo some years ago, and the School gave it to me as a parting gift after the class . Though definitely different, the little flowery scroll design reminds me of some of the tooling I’ve seen on some late 17th century German bindings, such as the panel border pictured on the alum-tawed pigskin binding here. And don’t forget - tomorrow at noon I’ll be posting a batch of finishing tools to my website - though this one won’t be a part of it
Hannah draw a rainbow on her #areyoubookenough_memory Steckalbum, so I decided to show it also at the spine. I used coloured paper strips before, but not like this!!! I love that she is getting me to use colours I wouldn’t normally never use! It also was fun to see how her work matched the colours of the strips inside ( swipe to see them on my previous post) and as we are a rainbow family, I now like it even more

I had a lot of fun making this gilding knife for @indi.gram - though simple enough of a concept, getting the edge just right can be a challenge - not sharp enough, and in your best case scenario not cutting the gold is the only consequence - more likely than not you end up tearing and smearing the leaf around. But too sharp and you end up slicing into suede cushion. I like a slightly stiffer blade, but they come in all shapes and sizes and flexibilities, and you just have to figure out what works best for you. Some people are really good at swishing the gold around, but I’m afraid my gold leaf handling aesthetics lean more on the utilitarian side.
I’m so grateful to everyone @eaosantodomingo and in Colombia in general who I had the opportunity to spend time with. The last two weeks were jam packed with making finishing tools, finishing our books, visiting special collections, and (at least for me) crying, especially at the airport (as you can see, so jam packed that I haven’t posted since everyone covered their books ♀️). The last six weeks, and the eight months of prep leading up to it, were absolutely incredible. Though I only had the chance to snap a few photos of a couple of the finished books, everyone did great work under a very tight schedule. There were plenty of challenges with planning a workshop in a country I hadn’t visited with a language I didn’t speak, but without a doubt this workshop was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Thank you thank you thank you Colombia; I can’t wait to see you again .
A lot of people have been asking me where all the tools and equipment came from for the course I’m currently teaching @eaosantodomingo. One of the biggest challenges about planning the class was that the school didn’t really have any specialized bookbinding equipment outside of a bunch of super sweet workbenches. So for a few months leading up to the class I worked via facetime with the incredible @cavtaller to get all the various pieces of equipment designed and built for the two classes (totaling 23 or so students). And in the months leading up to the class (and during the class as well ), Carlos single handedly made (for the first time) 2 press and ploughs, 3 large book presses, 12 finishing presses, 12 punching cradles, 12 folders, 13 sewing frames, 12 machinist squares, 12 awls, and currently we are making almost 50 finishing tools. So much stuff I couldn’t even fit it all in the picture. I initially thought that the school was crazy when they said they had a guy who could make all this equipment from scratch, but here it is, and here he is. On top of that, he is also a really great motorcycle chauffeur - I’ve really enjoyed the rides to and from the school with him - the traffic here is unreal - it’s about 10 miles from the school to Carlos’s house, and via taxi the ride takes about 2 hours - with Carlos and his motorcyle the ride is about 40 minutes - swipe to see why. I also put a picture of Carlos with his family (baby Luke not pictured because he was snuggled under his Mom’s sweater, and with Angelica, who is the wonderful person that initially contacted me about coming here. And finally, a sweet picture of me and my wife Katie, drawn for my by Sol, Carlos’s daughter. So much love here!!
Finally I finished my entry for this month #areyoubookenough_touch challenge. It took much longer than expected, but thanks again Sarah @editions.studio for encouraging me to play and learn! Here you can see and I wish you could touch my little spider book variation. I learned this model from @hedikyle and added some signatures and a penholder. I‘ll post some photos and write more tomorrow.
