Hello all, @ravenhalfmoon here for the 2019 Emerging Artist Takeover! I am honored to be chosen by @ceramics_monthly for this award. . I am originally from Norman, Oklahoma and an enrolled member of the Caddo Nation. While in school, I studied art and anthropology and have since focused on producing a body of work that is reflective of how I feel both as a woman and as a Native American living in the 21st century. In my work, I explore themes of “the other,” cultural appropriation, and history. In this picture, I was in Long Beach, California, where I recently finished a residency @csulbccc and was able to create my dream monumental pieces. It is important for me to emphasize that Caddo people and American Indian people are still relevant and continue to build traditions and create with clay today. What. A. Summer. I can’t even comprehend how amazing this experience was. From being a nervous wreck to loving every minute being around kids and my fellow staff members. Wrapped up a good weekend in Osage Country ✊⚡️ Great to spend time with my parents, the rest of my family and some lifelong friends - pc : @morgankidderco - This was my 16th year dancing at the Osage In-Lon-Shka and I had a good time in the arena again. Some years I do a lot of heavy and deep thinking while I dance and other years I just fully immerse myself in the dance. This year was a lot of both. I felt like I took a lot of new relationships and friendships from this past year with me and gave a lot of thought to my old friends, family AND my new & old self ‍♂️

Raven Halfmoon (@ravenhalfmoon): My favorite part of the process is building and using the clay to push and pull itself into what I have envisioned. While at @csulbccc, I was able to build works over 6 feet tall. For me personally, I am constantly challenged by the technicalities of ceramics and building large scale artwork. The real challenge for me is not the concepts or the ideas for my work, but physically executing the sculptures. Half of the work is not building the sculpture itself, but figuring out how to move it, fire it, unload it, ship it, and store it. However, I believe being challenged is important in studio practice and instrumental to producing great work. Finished and safely unloaded! @csulbccc This sculpture is a reflection on family and the bond between mother and daughter. She adorned with my tattoos as well as my mother’s. She is wearing a Dush-toh, which Caddo woman and girls wear while dancing. It consists of a frame with ribbons that flow down the back to the ground. I will be having a show this September @ninomiergallery in LA where this sculpture will be shown! I enjoy attending Powwows to watch dancing, eat Indian tacos, and look at beautiful artwork and jewelry.
