My old diet was milk, cheese and yogurt heavy - yet I was deficient in CALCIUM! What - Yep - when I first went full plant based I tracked a few days of eating my old diet which I considered to be pretty healthy - and I was short on calcium - I was getting about 70% of what I should daily - doesn’t sound like much but over decades that has repercussions. - How on earth was I deficient in calcium? - When I tracked my new plant based diet I was 200% OVER target! WTF. - That’s because most of the best calcium sources are PLANT BASED. ‍♀️Quick preface this is not fully inclusive food list & there are alternatives available which will meet all dietary requirements. Please ask google for more suggestions. - Let's talk about this thing known as calcium. It is an important game player in the great game of achieving an optimally functioning. Also one of its major benefits is its role in reducing the risk of developing osteoporosis as you get older. Having adequate levels throughout life is well put simply really fricking smart. - A calcium deficiency doesn't just happen over night, but the problem is that quite often you won't get any symptoms until you're pretty deficient. We lose calcium daily through bodily functions (not through carelessness ) but our body can't make its own so that's why it's important to replenish. - ‍To help with calcium absorption you must also have sufficient levels of vitamin D, if you don't then you could be eating ample but not absorbing enough. ‍♀️Post menopausal women, children & adolescent girls are the most likely candidates for a deficiency. Anyone who doesn't eat dairy will definitely need to be very aware of ensuring they are getting ample from other sources. Oh & I'm not saying you have to eat dairy before someone gets finger happy below. - Your overall diet is also key for calcium absorption.A diet low in fiber will reduce its absorption so just taking a supplement in these circumstances won't massively benefit you. So you really need to look at your overall diet. - Ample calcium &protein will positively impact your bone mass or density. There was information around claiming the opposite but studies have since shown this not to be the case. - Prioritise fulfilling needs from your diet & getting it from a variety of sources this ensure your getting other nutrients too (magnesium & vit k are also calciums important co workers) - Daily RDA does vary so please do your own research on what's right for you.If you decide that supplementation is necessary then check any other meds as there may negative interactions.
