“The relationship between [Calder and Picasso] is not like the great friendship that existed between Braque and Picasso in the 1900s, or between Calder and Léger through both artists’ lives. It takes place more silently, but also more visually, in the works themselves,” writes Donatien Grau in his catalogue essay for Calder-Picasso. The exhibition is on view at the Musée national Picasso-Paris (@museepicassoparis) until 25 August.

Although Devil Fish does not actually move – is not ‘mobile’ – its contours and cast shadows suggest great gestural movement. Calder’s refusal to establish a firm divide between the natural world and industrial materials led to a new kind of animistic metal sculpture. This type of standing configuration, consisting of sheets of torqued metal, became the defining format for what is known as the ‘stabile’ (grounded sculpture). Devil Fish is Calder’s first bolted work and the first to be scaled up from a small maquette. It was originally exhibited in 1937 at the Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York. #NGV #Calder

“We notice the movement of automobiles and beings in the street‚ but we do not notice that the earth turns ... As truly serious art must follow the greater laws‚ and not only appearances‚ I try to put all the elements in motion in my mobile sculptures. It is a matter of harmonising these movements‚ thus arriving at a new possibility of beauty.” – Alexander Calder, 1932.
