Here is a young ensatina salamander (Ensatina eshcsholtzii) crawling among the moist moss it uses to stay hydrated and cool. Unlike most amphibians, these salamanders are born looking like small adults, and have no larval development stage. . . . This species is very common all along the Western North American coast, stretching from British Columbia to Baja California. This species is a classic example of a “ring species”; although all different subspecies can interbreed, the harsh habitat of the Central Valley separating the Costal Range and the Sierra Nevada Mountains essentially prevents interbreeding, thus leading to the eventual creation of a new species. Moreover, their colors and patterns differ quite drastically throughout their range.

Southern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helleri) flipped under a rock in phenomenal helleri habitat. I was unable to encourage this rattlesnake (while staying out of striking distance) to move out of the way before I put the heavy rock back, (I really didn’t want to make him move but I had no other choice) so I had to use a stick. Even then, the rattlesnake stayed completely calm and didn’t express any desire to strike or recoil into striking position. What people don’t seem to realize is that no matter what rattlesnake situation you can get in, you will always be safer stepping back than killing it. https://youtu.be/22aYCoTe-0I is one of the dumbest YouTube videos I’ve watched with a whole lot of dumber comments. This Southern Pacific rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus helleri) was one of 5 snakes found today (1 ringneck, 3 SoPacs, and 1 blindsnake). It was the first adult of the year for me, and a big one. The blindsnake puts me up to 8 snake species so far this year.
