Mary Pratt: The Floating World spotlights a series of woodblock prints Pratt created in collaboration with Japanese master printmaker Masato Arikushi.
During a nine-year creative exchange, Pratt and Arikushi produced a suite of 10 prints which make up the series Transformations. These works come from Partt's careful observation and meditations on still life as an expression of the transitory nature of life.
Japanese woodblock prints are known to often use flat, linear styles of representation and include no more than 50 colours. Pratt's works in the Transformations series, however, depict three-dimensional forms as a result of using over 300 colours on 40 hand carved woodblocks.
Seven prints from the Transformations series are on view in the exhibition Mary Pratt: The Floating World, until 15 May.

This is a weird infrared image I made with a very old, busted filter. Last month, I found out that I received a Research and Creation grant from the Canada Council for the Arts that will allow me to focus on my work almost entirely for the next year. I've applied for CC grants unsuccessfully so many times in the past, so it's really surreal and ridiculously awesome to finally get one! I'll be going to Nunavut in May for two weeks to make new work. Then I'll be back home to mess around with analogue processes for several months after that. I will never finish being happy over this. I'm so grateful. Also among other things, I have bought a new infrared filter.

At the BC Provincial Museum in Victoria, several photographs of #Natives by Edward Curtis are displayed. There is so much stoic power in the eyes of the subjects he captured on film. For me, it imparts a feeling of being surrounded by Coast Salish ancestors, and this is one of the aspects I creatively draw from in my own storytelling.

A new exhibition of works from the Owens' collection by Mary Pratt is going up now. Roxie has transformed the gallery from dark grey for projecting video, back to a crisp white.
Curated by Emily Falvey, Mary Pratt: The Floating World will be on view this weekend until 15 May.
