If you’re just joining us, @bookofcinz, myself, and a host of other #Caribbeanbookstagrammers have been posting furiously to promote the #ReadCaribbean challenge. The challenge invites readers to celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month this June by reading works by Caribbean authors, about the Caribbean, or set in the region. For Day 8 of the photo challenge, I am posting a Caribbean historical fiction read by Lawrence Scott. Scott is a Trinidadian writer based in the UK who has published several novels and short stories. The former Benedictine monk’s novel, Light Falling on Bamboo, focuses on the life and times of acclaimed 19th century Trini painter Michel Jean Cazabon. In particular, the work reveals the attitudes of the artist and others living under the then plantation society. What Caribbean historical fiction are you reading this month?

For Day 9 of the #ReadCaribbean photo challenge, I’m posting a book that represents translated Caribbean literature. Some may argue that Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a Latin American writer but I definitely also consider him a Caribbean author. Many people don’t know that Colombia is washed on one side by the Caribbean Sea. Marquez was born in the coastal town of Aracataca and the Caribbean landscape and sensibility there definitely affected his writing. In a 1982 interview, he said, “I believe the Caribbean showed me how to see reality in another way, to accept supernatural elements as something that forms part of our daily life.” One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien Años de Soledad) is his magnum opus. The story crosses several generations of the ill-fated Buendia family in the fictitious and magical place of Macondo. I reread it a couple of times and it still surprises me. Have you read any Marquez? What translated Caribbean literature are you reading this June?

Caribbean Beat is the in-flight magazine of Caribbean Airlines. It's a gem when it comes to #ReadCaribbean recommendations. It's also a treasure trove for interviews and essays from and about Caribbean writers. Marlon James wrote for the mag and I have contributed on a couple occasions (see this photo). It's also a great beach read!

From Yaad is a short immersive read about what happens when Stevonie receives a letter from Jamaica (Yaad), that throws her entire life off balance. Stevonie is a second generation Jamaican, living and working in Brooklyn as a Marketing professional who is about to invest into a new business with one of her best friends. By all intents, Stevonie's life is going great, that is until she receives a letter from Jamaica concerning her late father's will. - - A short but entertaining read for me. I particularly loved hearing from Stevonie's mother, their interactions were believable and totally authentic. - - Also…. Can you say…. Cover love? • • • #FromYaad #ShortReads #ReadCaribbean #CaribbeanBooks

An Untamed State by Roxane Gay is BookOfCinz Book Club pick for April. I read this book back in January 2016 and I remember finishing the book and feeling so raw. The book is set in Haiti and explores the kidnapping of the protagonist. There are so many themes that is looked at in-depth and it will make for a great book club selection. - - -  I have been meeting online with the persons who are joining me for the read along and so far the book does offer a lot to discuss. We meet next week Wednesday, April 24th in Trinidad to discuss the book. With the Easter holidays approaching there is still time for you to pick this book up and read it in time for our in-person meet up. - - Aside: my friend said this book cover reminds her of a John Grisham book and I agreed.... I just cant remember which book... - Have you read this book yet? • • • • #AnUntamedState #RoxaneGay #BookOfCinzBookClub #HaitianLiterature #ReadCaribbean #Caribbeanbooks
