In galvanic cathodic protection systems, the most common active metal used as anode to protect iron alloys is the magnesium. Magnesium is used in low-resistivity soils and water.
•
To verify the correct functionality of the magnesium anode before welding the cable to the structure to be protected, we measure the open circuit potential with respect to a Copper / Copper Sulfate (Cu/CuSO4) reference electrode. According to the standard ISO-15589-1-2015 the typical potential of the magnesium alloy M1 varies from -1.57 V to -1,60 V. The value measured in the photograph is -1.68 V / Cu- CuSO4, which shows that the anode is working correctly.
