WHERE THE BUDDHIST MONKS DWELT: In the digital age that we are in today where everything is possible almost at the push of a button; there is beauty, a sense of calm and timelessness as one walks into caves built for the purpose of connecting with the self. No medium is required to centre oneself but the will to remain quiet and discover. . Kanheri Caves located around 42 kms from the city, where a hill of basalt is awash with over a 100 caves cut deep into it, was abuzz with activity from 1 BCE to almost 10 CE. One can't help but feel reverence and awe looking at the caves, the exquisitely carved sculptures and attention to detail, the monks residences -- some with rock-cut pillows, shelf for storage -- and the rainwater harvesting method long before it came into vogue in the present times. . The Chaitya hall (pic 3) with its amazing synchronicity in the pillars, the Buddha image (pic 4) where the Buddha is shown holding the upper robe with the inner robe too spelt out in stone (incidentally the two sculptures facing each other are now Asia's largest standing Buddha images after the collosal Bamiyan Buddha images were destroyed), the Chaitya carving (pic 7)--thanks probably to a Chinese patron, and an entire wall panel carved with statues of the Buddha (pic 8), a nod perhaps to the Sravasti miracle. . Vandalism in the form of graffiti greets the visitor in cave number 1 where a Chaitya without a harmika and Chhatra is scribbled with inane messages. Should one even be surprised? . Monks living in a commune with a common goal of finding the self and true nature of existence-- what it must take to be mindful all the time, introspect and learn the texts; and be silent as well! An awful lot of mental churn that must have been. But the permanent marks the monks and their patrons left on stone that one can visit in the millenium speaks a lot about the non-intrusive nature of the life of the monks and the teachings they followed.
