The snow has melted again and the calves are running through the fields while the green grass is starting to speckle the fields. Each morning as we checked the calves, spring is starting to settle in. I always look forward to seeing the Sandhill Cranes come by for their spring visit to our hayfields. The boys learn more and more each year about what makes April such a special month on the ranch.

Confession: This is my favourite bull calf of 2019 so far! What can I say? His dam is a special cow who has raised two heifers that my sons have showed. His maternal brother is a two year old in our herd bull pen and I am still trying to decide if I will offer him for sale this spring. I can’t wait to see this bull calf mature!

We also put her mother's number on the back of her tag. The past couple days have been a bit slower. This weekend is going to be a busy one, I think!

We had a successful weekend of turning some groups of cows out onto pasture. It is so satisfying watching them take their first few bites of fresh green grass. The calves ran around together and investigate their new surroundings while their mothers graze. This will be their home for the next few months. Yes! Spring is here!

As we start to work the cattle this morning, we comment on how calm and almost..should I say..warm, it is. Within a few minutes, all the paperwork and vaccines were blowing off the table. Who said it was calm!? Never speak until we are finished the job! The wind is always blowing up here!
