Can you guess from which John Duncan painting we’ve taken these details? Initially called ‘Spring Song’, this artwork was described as Duncan’s ‘happy picture’. The painting (painted in 1916-1917) is full of spring flowers; you can find primroses, azaleas, laburnum, lilac, tulips and grape hyacinth. Have a guess about its title in the comments below and check our feed in a few days, you’ll be able to see this beauty whole! #BiteSizeKelvingrove
The Round Tower at Coolcarrigan, County Kildare. Attached to a Celtic Revival church built on a private estate in the first half of the 1880s, its design derives from that of the 12th century Temple Finghin and McCarthy’s Tower at Clonmacnoise, County Offaly. #RoundTower #Coolcarrigan #CelticRevival #Church #Kildare theirishaesthete.com
The Oratory of the Sacred Heart, Dún Laoghaire - Built as a WW1 memorial in the grounds of the old Dominican Convent (formerly a Regency villa called Echo Lodge with 19C additions, now demolished ), the oratory was a passion project of Sr. Concepta Lynch (born Lily Lynch, 1874-1939), designed and painted by her between 1920-36, with stained glass windows designed by the Harry Clark Studio. Ornately decorated in a Gaelic Revival style with many stylistic references to the Book of Kells, Lynch learned the art of illumination from her father Thomas Joseph Lynch who ran a stained glass business on Middle Abbey Street in Dublin city and developed the “Lynch Method”. Lynch had lost both her parents by the age of 16, and maintained the family business until she made the decision to sell the business and enter an enclosed order of nuns in the Dominican convent in Dún Laoghaire in 1896, and taught music and art to the students there. I had never heard of Sr. Concepta Lynch or this marvellous oratory until I volunteered here for Open House Dublin years ago. You too have a chance to visit this splendid example of Gaelic Revival art, as Dún Laoghaire County Council are running limited daily tours on Wednesday, Saturday and Sundays as part of their 'Summer of Heritage' programme (and 'Winter of Heritage'). #summerofheritage

Celtic art encompasses a wide time span, but its singular style is well-known. Highly ornamental, its complex curvilinear highly interpreted naturalistic patterns encompass intricate interlacing, knots, foliates, and crosses, while animals real and mythical stretch and lie almost hidden within the curves. “Solstice” from Samad's Four Seasons Collection is inspired by Celtic art, and is itself a masterpiece of design and the art of handweaving. Shown here in the grey colorway, in truth the intricate varying values of grey are more grisaille than grey meaning the intricate shades combined with the design create an almost sculptural look. Woven with hand-carded wool, the collection evokes humanity’s complex relationship with nature and the divine, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
