Quick #mirrorselfie in my @airbnb before heading to Hanover Airport this morning to fly back to London!✈️
⠀⠀
I usually try and stay in Airbnb's as it's so much easier to practice/cook/yoga in them rather than in hotels, and I've usually always been really lucky and had a great stay!
This time, though... While the flat was absolutely lovely, clean, spacious and comfortable, I missed out on checking on the area beforehand. So, turns out, not only was my airbnb located in *the* party district of Hanover, no, there were about 3 NIGHTCLUBS in the ground level of the SAME BUILDING. ⠀⠀
So there wasn't a SINGLE MINUTE literally during the last days - not at night obviously but even not during daytime (like WTF!) - where people stopped partying and turned off their suuuuper bassy music that I could *feel* even whilst lying in bed, because the vibrations were SO STRONG!
⠀⠀
Twice at night I called the police, but to no avail, obviously. ('Do you know where you're at?' 'NO I DO NOT!') So I was left with little but no choice other than to just try and ignore it to focus on the recording with the NDR yesterday.
⠀⠀
Puh. You guys you CAN'T IMAGINE how lucky I am to be back in London in my furniture-less albeit beautiful room!
I think I’m experiencing what @brenebrown calls a “vulnerability hangover.” I started #BachIn30Days as a fun and challenging thing to push me to learn one of my favorite pieces, and it really has been SO rewarding in so many ways. But - and this shouldn’t come as a surprise - it’s also been quite scary at times....which is exactly why I did it.
Vulnerability has been a big focus in my life lately. I feel very comfortable being vulnerable on stage (maybe that’s why I love it so much), but I really struggle with being vulnerable in my personal life, so I’ve done a lot of work this year centered around being and practicing vulnerability. Anyone who has done this kind of work knows it’s not easy.
Without realizing it, #BachIn30Days has been a continuation of that work. This might sound crazy, but I did not realize just how intimate this whole process would be. I’m used to being on camera, I love getting to interact with all of you, and I knew that, even if I didn’t reach my goal, it would be a positive learning experience for all of us.
But. Letting you all into my practice room and watch me learn a very difficult piece, observe my learning process, see my many mistakes, my wins, my 1% improvements - turns out that’s very intimate! And it requires a pretty high level of openness and vulnerability. No wonder I’ve been so drained at the end of every day!
Thankfully, all of your comments have been so incredibly positive and supportive, and I’m so grateful for that. I would not be able to do this if that weren’t the case!
Just a little reminder that you guys are awesome. Thanks for being you

Well I've got the place to myself and the sun is shining through into the kitchen brilliantly, so I figured I'd spend the day of practice in here! Currently working on this piece! I'll record it in full some time soon!
.
.
I've lapsed a little on recording my practice in story mode. Partly because I've been taking it easy as of late playing-wise. But I'm going to get back on top of it all now! I'm still looking to get those really controlled pianissimos back. Something to work on though! The 'how I stayed in shape' book covers that pretty well and then there's de la sonorite too.
.
.
I zipped through that new season of Bosch on Amazon prime in about 2 days! It was so good! I might have to read the books too. For now I'm going to relax a little more and chat to some friends! Oh I thought about doing a star wars video today, but I couldn't find a decent arrangement of anything. I'll definitely look out for material though, or try and arrange something myself! I could always order something in, but sheet music can get quite expensive!
.
.
Chat to you all soon & happy practicing!

Ahhh, back to some relaxing Moyse tone books again! Let's just say it's somewhat of a contrast to yesterdays video! Thank you so much for your responses to that by the way, I am truly thankful to have even one person engage with my videos and it's something I will never take for granted. Thank you! ❤️

I was on deezer (very similar to spotify) earlier listening to this piece performed by Cecilia Bartoli (one of my absolute favourite performers), and I was inspired to record this! I could listen to her sing all day. Truly masterful. And I remember the post a while back I made on the parallels between flute and voice. You listen to a performer such as her, and you can't help but be inspired to come up with new ideas and phrasing that might not have previously occured to you.

I have been enjoying starting my days practice warming up with harmonics and tone work on the Alto lately, rather than on concert flute. Now I seem to work my way up all the registers from the very bottom. It used to be Flute then Piccolo. Now it's Alto, Flute, Piccolo xD I'm finding that solid tone work on the Alto seems to stand me in good stead for when I switch over That, and I just reaaaally enjoy playing on this instrument! So I find it quite fun to begin the day on it!
.
.
What are your go-to low register tone exercises? I'm interested to know, as it's always something I'm working on! I hear some flautists (like my all-time favourite Sharon Bezaly), make the low register sound truly effortless. Feel free to discuss in the comments! ❤️

For now I'm going to go relax and watch some more shows! Although I'll still be about to chat! Speak to you all soon, and happy practicing!

I do love a good etude I have to admit! Thankfully this book is crammed with them! Would you like to hear me cover more etudes in general? The opus 15 book really is a delight. Like always though, I'm forever on the lookout for more decent study books!

Thank you so much for the reception to the Muczynski Sonata recording! It's a fun piece isn't it! I would love to perform it again some time. It's been too long! I'm thrilled that people are going out and buying it too! As far as I know it's £15 from justflutes! Bargain if you ask me!
.
.
I'm going to spend the evening going over a little bit of alto and piccolo playing (quite the mixture! There's a reason for it I promise haha!) So I'll speak to you all soon! Happy practicing!

A throwback to the Allemande from the Partita in A Minor for solo flute BWV 1013 by J.S. Bach.
.
(Three Part Video! Swipe left at the end of the first two sections in order to continue!)
.
There's something truly unique about the Allemande. Every day I feel like playing it differently! I imagine most instrumentalists experience something similar. Also, it's effectively the flautists equivalent of a pick 'n mix! When you hear someone else play it, you're suddenly enamoured with their interpretation / phrasing choices & decide to incorporate aspects of it into your own. I find it's ever evolving. I think that's somewhat of a beautiful thing. .
I recorded this back at the beginning of December. The movement is a great critical exercise for flautists looking to learn from themselves. I also recorded it back in 2007 for a competition. I finished playing & was satisfied. I then played back the recording & was shocked! Gaps in phrasing, poor choice of breaths making it sound uneven. Yet in my mind while playing it, I'd done everything "right!" It wasn't bad by any means, but I think it was the first wake up call for me that I needed to analyze my own playing more closely in order to improve.
.
The other brilliant thing about the Allemande is how multi-functional it is for improving various aspects of your playing (especially when you take some liberties with articulations & variating it). I've mentioned it previously, but there's a fantastic Moyse book on the Allemande with 50 variations! It's so good! Personally, I have a diaphragm exercise I like to use that consists solely of playing this piece with no articulation, just gut puffs! If you do it right, you'll feel it afterwards! But my goodness it's worth it I promise!
.
I'm off to watch the new Avengers film now, infact by the time I post this I'll have seen it! (I'm writing this out on the train while I have nothing else to do!) Hope you all have a brilliant weekend! Speak to you soon, and happy practicing!
