The design industry as well as this country is so insensitive to the Black experience. No one ever considered how we (Black people) would be affected by having an architectural style called “Plantation” house? These houses carry the horrific past of our ancestors. But yet, these spaces are celebrated and even win industry awards. The very words "plantation style" should be eradicated from society and from our design vocabulary! But no one considers how these structures keep the emotional welts from healing. We were the ones who worked the fields in the ominous shadows of these houses. We were the ones who swung from the branches of their trees or from the end of a rope hung from their private gallows. Our blood, sweat tears and rape babies are buried on these lands. These shouldn't be homes they should be monuments to the destroyed dead! Today “Plantation” is a design style used to describe the interior details and finishes such as shutters and space plans. This is not a style that should be celebrated. But rather what should be discussed are the structures in their historical context. We need to stop using “plantation homes” and use mansions instead perhaps? Your work is “too ethnic” This is the most recent rejection from a showroom @nydc not wanting to represent my ceramic collection. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As an unapologetically Black woman, my work is not “ethnic”, it’s deeply rooted in the patterns and techniques behind handmade textiles such as Kente, Adire, Kuba and Bogalon fabrics. The craft and creativity within my culture is deeper than one word. A culture filled with a legacy of masterpieces that we ALL draw inspiration from. I continue practicing these traditions by using pattern as a language to communicate the beauty of my culture and heritage. ___________________________ “Ethnic” has been misused by the design industry to identify works from African, Asian, and Indigenous cultures, without any relevance to the process and or meaning behind the work. This labeling eliminates any effort to gain knowledge of an experience that is not familiar. I will not accept this label, challenge those who conveniently use it without research, and seek opportunities to share my work in places that respect and appreciate my art. It would be great if the design industry was proactive towards creating an environment that embraces culture from all perspectives, removing the inaccurate use of the marginalizing phrase “too ethnic”. _________________ P.S. Okay, I know she is swinging on top of padded mats, but if I posted her doing something riskier, her grandparents would get upset with me:) Risky play in a supervised space is so important for kids. As a parent, I know how uncomfortable it makes us feel to watch our kids climb, jump, and swing on anything and everything. But I also know that many children love it and NEED it for so many developmental reasons. So... I am learning how to change my wording from “be careful,” which either evokes fear (“something bad might happen”) or ignoring (“this isn’t scary”) from my kids, to language that helps them build self-awareness and problem-solving skills. Some replacements I’m using for “be careful” are: -“Notice how (ie. the monkey bars are wet and slippery).” - “Do you see/hear (ie. the rocks behind you)?” - “How do you plan (ie. to get down once you have finished)?” - “Try moving (ie. your legs and feet very slowly while you do that).” Most of all, I am practicing keeping MYSELF calm when I see my kids trying new, risky challenges. As their parent, I am their mirror and experience interpreter, so sometimes I just have to take deep breaths and let them take the plunge! #riskyplay #changethelanguage #parentingishard #coachingforparentsandkids
