What do we love most about Chettinad homes? The Courtyard: Open to sky, filled with sunshine. Every typical home in this region has a similar courtyard. Around the Courtyard are the rooms. This mansion we stayed in had 15 rooms around the Courtyard. Trust me when I say this, this is a small home. The other houses in this region has over 50 rooms. Why would a family need 50 rooms? Not for privacy, not used as a bedroom but a store room. The chettiars are traders and they often needed space to keep the things they would buy from different region they travel to. They also needed space to store the dowry they offer/receive during the weddings. Inspite of having so many rooms, they slept at night near the courtyards with all the ventilation. Interesting no? And here we make bedrooms and have cupboards for storage. Speaks volumes about they way of life we live. When CGH Earth took over, they made the rooms into more bedroom like. Each rooms are gorgeously furnished with antique beds and has plenty of ventilation and a balcony. Not only did we go to college together, we joined the same company in Bombay when we graduated, we each met our husbands there, who both happened to be Christian/Catholic, and we both had registered weddings followed by small celebrations with our close family and friends. And to prove how small this Instagram community that we’re all a part of can really be, she’s the aunt of Anandita @sareesaatsamundarpaar, a connection that came to light quite comically during A and R’s last trip to London.
