Its #worldautismawarenessday! Which is really every day for our family with this cutie little brother of mine. Ray- who is the fastest runner I’ve ever met, thinks he’s a comedian, and all around best little brother to ever exist- happens to have autism. As you may have read the other day in our sign language post, I first learned sign language several years ago with my family with Ray, as he was nonverbal at the time and doctors said he might never talk. Well, he showed them! Spoiler alert: he is in his 20s, speaks and walks and has a job and a girlfriend and a bigger social calendar than I do because he’s so fun and funny. Seriously, his meme account is hilarious. As you may know, having so many siblings with learning differences and different special needs propelled the desire to create a space for kids to learn exactly how they are wired to learn- in the millions of different ways they learn! (If you cant tell, I’m talking about @bigcityreaders ;)) My little brother doesn’t sign anymore, but I continued to study it through and post college and he was my cheerleader as he always is. He showed up at my DePaul graduation repping a DePaul T under his button up and it’s just such a representation of how special he is. I found a note he wrote that said “thought I should let the world know I have an amazing sister” and I cried for a good half hour. I love days like today (#worldautismday) that remind us to take a minute and celebrate how beautifully different every human around us is. No two children are the same and no two children can learn the same. I believe it’s our job as teachers, parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, to shift OUR ways of teaching to help our kids, not the other way around. Try it, you might surprise yourself. If we were truly aware of how unique every single human we interact with is and stopped to see the world how they do, I don’t think we would ever be able to stop crying. I HOPE you know someone with autism to celebrate this month. If you don’t, I hope you meet someone that rocks your world. XO.

Let’s talk about something super common and super annoying... the warnings you get from strangers and acquaintances during pregnancy. At one point I started making note of all of the times strangers (let’s be honest, usually in line at Starbucks or target because where else do i interact with people?) gave me “advice”. But the “advice” was usually something that just fueled every fear I already had about becoming a mom. “Sleep while you can”, “you’re going to get so much bigger”, “newborns will feel easy compared to toddlers”, “enjoy your freedom now”, and my favorite, which happened when i said a quiet little “ow” while getting blood drawn “oh honey, you don’t even know what pain is yet” (and she was not saying it to be funny). I understand people are trying to brace you for the impact of child birth and parenting, but guess what? I KNOW ALL OF THIS, AND IM ALREADY THINKING ABOUT ALL OF THESE HORRIBLY SCARY ANXIETY INDUCING THINGS. It was almost worse when someone would say something sweet only to follow it up with one of these dooms day comments, like “it will be the best day of your life, but you’ll never sleep again” SO my piece of advice to you when you are talking with a pregnant stranger? Here is what you should say: 1. If you’re a parent, tell them your favorite part of having kids (especially about having a newborn) and leave it at that. 2. Say “congratulations!” And leave it at that. . . . Oh, by the way, when you become a parent you become a multi tasking master. Marg in one hand, pouch in the other? Life is good. . . . Parents, comment with something you love about having kids, or a special memory you have from that newborn stage for all of the parents-to-be who might be reading this. #sharetheeverymom
