1984 Mercedes-Benz 300TD (S123) _____ This S123 Merc was simply the Estate/Wagon version of the legendary W123 car, which itself was built for 9 years between 1976 and 1985. But it was Mercedes-Benz' most successful model ever, selling around 2.7 million all over the world in its time. These were known to be some of the most well-built yet simplest cars ever. This 300TD used a 3.0-litre diesel inline-5 cylinder that made around 87HP, and it was famous for being one of the most reliable engines in the world. Apparently they can go almost 1 MILLION kilometres without needing a rebuild! Although that's only if you actually maintain them properly, of course. That being said, it was a pretty heavy car, and it wasn't particularly fast at all. All wagons also came with a hydraulic self-levelling suspension in the rear to ensure an even ride. Being an '80s car, it didn't have folding wing mirrors, but rather a pair spring-loaded ones. If you hit something (granted it's a smallish impact), your mirrors would've just moved in and gone right back out again. Another quirk: you could electronically control the angle of the passenger side mirror, yet the driver's side mirror was manually operated. W123s can be had for relatively cheap these days, considering how many were made. While here many are religiously cared for, in some countries they are still used as dependable workhorses and are basically driven until the wheels fall off. I absolutely love these cars, especially when they have the color-matching hubcaps. This one belongs to @highway_naturally and is just another practical classic in his ever-growing collection. I really hope I get to own a turbocharged W123 or S123 myself at some point. There are quite a few in India, and their owners usually take very good care of them, like this clean example. But I have seen some that are just rotting to the ground and it's just sad to see.
