Today’s #albumoftheday is Cnoc An Tursa’s The Giants Of Auld. This was the Scottish folk metal/black metal band’s debut studio album, released in 2015. Straight out the gate, Cnoc An Tursa’s blending of traditional folk melodies and black metal vocals seats perfectly within the rhythms created by the band’s powerful sonic blasts. The drumming and riffs are heavy and filled with that killer European black metal venom, but without sacrificing any of the traditional instrumentation found in folk music of the region. Rather than one part of the band standing out, each part of Cnoc An Tursa uniformly delivers powerful melodies and rhythm that strengthen the entire band’s sound, rather than there just being one standout instrument that they band gives priority to and falls back on. The only thing unfortunate about this is that the mix isn’t always perfect. The songs are quite loud in general and do not have a lot of sonic flexibility, with each part of the track being as volumetrically dense as the last. Much of this is probably due to this record being the band’s debut studio effort, as well as the general production quality that is often sought after for a black metal record. While the recording quality doesn’t often impact the enjoyment of the record, I do wish that the record sounded more full in all ranges, rather than everything just being loud with the bass really low. Still, The Giants Of Auld is a fantastic record that blends the beautiful soundscapes of folk metal with the harshness of black metal. If you love heavier European metal, give this one a listen. My favorite songs off of this album are The Lion Of Scotland, The Spellbound Knight, and In Shadowland.
