Tucked between two massive reef structures, a male White-spotted boxfish watches closely as I lean in with my camera before plunging into a dark crevice nearby. Ostracion meleagris and all Ostraciidae get their name (ostracion via the Greek 'ostrakon' meaning hard shell) from the hexagonal plate-like scales on their skin that are fused together into a solid box-like carapace. While this box prevents the fish from making quick movements, few other fish are able to eat the adults. Boxfish are closely related to both pufferfishes and filefishes. . #tropical #island #ocean #reef #fish #underwater #diving #coastalknowledgebroker

#Repost @maclikesthesea with @repostapp. ・・・ The blue-lipped sea krait (Laticauda laticaudata) is a species of venomous sea snakes found in tropical Indo-Pacific oceanic waters. They are often seen in large numbers in the company of cooperative hunting parties of giant trevally and goatfish. We found this snake while conducting sea grass assessments with high school and college students. #sea #snake #seagrass #guimaras #philippines #peacecorps #peacecorpsphilippines #coastalknowledgebroker

Climbing down the muddy hillside draped in non-native vines, I stop at the edge of the flowing waters focused on the task at hand. Pulling out the equipment in my backpack, I’m startled by the frantic motions uncharacteristic of stream flow. Fumbling for the camera without looking away, I settle into stillness and watch the commotion. . Anguilla marmorata are a rare sight during the sun tinged hours of the day, preferring darkness to move and feed. Yet here, between two towering waterfalls, the medium sized asuli was struggling to find their way to higher waters. Were you washed down by the incessant rainfall? Or had you, after noticing the trap sitting unused on the shoreline, decided safety was further from humankind? . In a moment of exhaustion, I lean in to snap a quick picture before moving downstream to continue my work, glancing distractedly towards my mottled kin. As I tuck the gear away and turn to climb back up the hill, a ripened banana colored flash darts over the edge and slips into the depths of dark freshwater. . #tropical #island #streams #eel #underwater #coastalknowledgebroker

Captivated by the precision and stillness, a familiarity of behaviors signaled by colors and motions, I maintain my buoyancy while the current draws me closer. Routine relationality of euphonic underwater soundscapes. Two objects folding in mutualistic gravity. . One of my favorite assemblages to stumble upon while diving are cleaning stations. Usually maintained by a small group of bluestreak cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidatus), the small fish perform a gambol to greet visitors, referred to as “clients.” Their movements and distinctive lateral strip help larger fish identify them as cleaner fish. . The wrasses proceed to eat parasites and dead tissues off their clients, including the body, gills, and sometimes mouth. The mutualistic relationship is essential to both the health of the client fish and the resilience of the cleaner wrasses, providing them food and protection. . #tropical #island #coral #reef #underwater #fish #coastalknowledgebroker

Crashing against the barrier reef behind me, the waves echo around mixed with the crackling tones of fish feeding en masse. Sinking to the seafloor, breath held, mind focused, the entire ocean begins to speak out. Vast distances of vibrational matter, fluid relations between the living and the not-so-living, assemblage like currents full of metaphors and plankton and knowledge and fluxes and the tears of lost souls on moonless nights. The weight is both comforting and terrifying, a clear sense of place that seems to wash away any sense of self. Despite my stillness, chest pressed against a lone sandy patch amidst rocky substrate and generations of corals, everything appears to be in a constant state of change. . When I first saw a coral reef, I was awestruck with the specters of depth and fluidity, here and not here, the impossibilities of underwater realities. That feeling never seems to dissipate; when I glimpse massive corals the size of cars or the rainbow of corals breathing in and out juvenile fish secured in the branches, I'm inspired. It's especially pronounced with the sight of charismatic megafauna gracefully tacking around reefs, bated breaths expelled with gleeful passion. Yet, even in the most mundane moments beneath the surge, a single parrotfish can captivate me as it darts and weaves out of perception, defying terrestrial-based sensibilities. . Government reports lacking telos only make the waters more turbid. Like COTs outbreaks or mass bleaching events or reef flats full of sediments or fear-inducing species loneliness, it only brings about more darkness. But there is light somewhere, waves overhead twinkling like stars, reflections off silver scales flashing past, 'vanishing at least a dozen times into something better'. When you stay underwater long enough, you can hear the voices of the youth, the indigenous, the unheard, the ambitious, the hopeful, the passionate, the dedicated. 'May the fluency of the ocean be yours', for all of our sakes. The course is treacherous and full of disillusionment, yet 'through it all, part of you will still walk on, no matter how, over the waves.' . #tropical #island #underwater #coastalknowledgebroker

The little A. marmorata springs out from beneath a small stone the moment my toes sink into the cold water. Curious with the unfamiliarity of this place, a body morphed from elver to yellow eel in what could be days or months. The chosen pool of stream-fed water serving as home for the next 8-20 years before being called forth to the great beyond of cyclical death and rebirth. . Nibbling at fingers and inspecting the camera lens, there is no fear, just knowledge to acquire with each successive change in the environment. This pool may never go dry, security in the face of global warmth. Other elvers may not be so lucky swimming upstream year-round, their bodies drawn towards freshwater sanctuaries. . We are both travelers in temporary stasis, in intimate relationality with the waters and lands and airs of this island. An older mottled soul lived in this pool when I first arrived, but vanished mysteriously, hopefully, out to sea in an unexpected deluge. If only we can all be so fortunate, sailing out towards our calling, vibrational materiality heard in the rustling of leaves. . #tropical #island #underwater #eel #OOO #coastalknowledgebroker

The ocellated eagle ray (Aetobatus ocellatus) went previously under the guise of spotted eagle ray (A. narinari) until the last decade when authorities identified three separate populations based on genetic and morphologic evidence. All the species share the familiar white spots and a handful of venomous spines just behind their pelvic fins. . A. ocellatus are found in the tropical coastal waters of the Indo-West Pacific. Usually seen near coral reefs, they feed on gastropods, molluscs, octopuses, and fishes. Although, they are known to swim to 60m depths and can be encountered well offshore in open waters. . Listed as vulnerable under the IUCN, their main threats are from trawling bycatch, pressures on artisanal fishing activities, the impacts of land-based sources of pollution, and being collected for the marine aquarium trade. These threats are particularly pronounced due to the low fecundity and 12 year generation length. . #tropical #island #ocean #underwater #eagleray #coastalknowledgebroker
