In our dining room in front of a ca. 1840 gilt looking glass (probably original to the house) in a 1930s peignoir attributed to Callot Soeurs (from @wildfellhall) with a lotus print, trimmed in delicate lace, including a deco touch of three triangular lace pieces at the bodice (swipe to see the back too). I am holding a piece of a French Napoleonic era coffee service from ca. 1810 (from @old_beautiful). Each of the pieces is hand painted with classical figures, a wonderful example of neo-classical design in Empire porcelain (also prominent in furniture and fashion of the time). In this period, in both Europe and the United States, women's dresses could be not more substantial than the 1930s piece I wear here, with the drapery often mimicking Graeco-Roman dress. At the same time Egyptian revival motifs also become popular, following the 1798 invasion of Egypt by Napoleon Bonaparte and his French troops. Napoleon brought with him an army of savants: artists, architects, surveyors, botanists, and engineers who could record ancient and modern Egypt. Whereas use of Egyptian designs had already been present during the Renaissance (the Borgia apartments in the Vatican being one of the most spectacular examples), the Napoleonic expedition created the first accurate copies of Egyptian monuments, enabling some more successful deployments of Egyptianizing designs in the early nineteenth century (although Champollion announces the decipherment of hieroglyphs in 1822, proper use of hieroglyphs bedevils Egyptomania through the present day). Ancient Egypt remained a beloved inspiration for Napoleon, and in 1811 he signed a decree altering the official coat of arms of the city of Paris: the vessel that had long graced the city's seal would now hold a seated figure of the goddess Isis. .

An incredibly rare English stern carving of the Royal Stuart coat of arms, from a Man-of-War (a powerful warship or frigate from the 16th to the 19th century) of the Royal Navy c. 1660-1675. ⠀

Coat of Arms and Shield of Arms

◼ Three-point label with a red escallop, alluding to the patrilineal arms of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.
.
◼ English: Coat of arms of HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge (Formerly Prince William of Wales, William Arthur Philip Louis; born 21 June 1982) son of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. The coat of arms was granted in June 2000, on his 18th birthday. The small red ‘escallop’ or sea-shell on the central point alludes to the arms of his mother and the Spencer family. He is the only one of Queen Elizabeth II's grandchildren to bear a label of three points (usually reserved only for a child of the Sovereign).

The royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom, or the Royal Arms for short, is the official coat of arms of the British monarch, currently Queen Elizabeth II.
.
.
◼ These arms are used by the Queen in her official capacity as monarch of the United Kingdom. Variants of the Royal Arms are used by other members of the British royal family; & by the British government in connection with the administration & government of the country.
.
◼ In Scotland (second picture), there exists a separate version of the Royal Arms, a variant of which is used by the Scotland Office. The arms in banner form serve as basis for the monarch's official flag, known as the Royal Standard.
.
◼ In the standard variant used outside of Scotland, the shield is quartered, depicting in the first & fourth quarters the three passant guardant lions of England; in the second, the rampant lion & double tressure flory-counterflory of Scotland; & in the third, a harp for Ireland. The crest is a statant guardant lion wearing the St Edward's Crown, himself on another representation of that crown. The dexter supporter is a likewise crowned English lion; the sinister, a Scottish unicorn. According to legend a free unicorn was considered a very dangerous beast; therefore the heraldic unicorn is chained, as were both supporting unicorns in the royal coat of arms of Scotland.
.
◼ In the greenery below, a thistle, Tudor rose & shamrock are depicted, representing Scotland, England & Ireland respectively.
.
◼ This armorial achievement comprises the motto, in French, of English monarchs, Dieu et mon Droit (God and my Right), which has descended to the present royal family as well as the Garter circlet which surrounds the shield, inscribed with the Order's motto, Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on him who thinks evil).
