Shells were and are usually large-calibre projectiles fired by artillery, combat vehicles, tanks, and warships. Shells usually had the shape of a cylinder topped by an ogive-shaped nose for good aerodynamic performance, in World War I, ogives were typically two circular radius head. It's 2018 last ride! --- An Italian officer descending the Mombrone during his last exercise, 1906. The Italian Cavalry School, created in 1823, was responsible for the training of all armed forces cavalry staff. Every officer of the Cavalry School in Pinerolo (near the Alps) was required to go down “the descent of Mombrone” before they left the school. The 6 metres drop from the window of a ruined castle about three miles from Pinerolo was considered a test of nerve. An amazing picture of an allready battle hardened part of the STUG Battalion of 9th SS Panzer Division Hohenstaufen combined with Heer soldiers rolling trough the streets of Arnhem. (i also inserted a picture of one of the stugs that was hit by a English PIAT after the battle of Market Garden!) . Normandy Hohenstaufen suffered losses from Allied fighter bombers during its move to Normandy, delaying its arrival until 26 June 1944. Approximately 50% of the division's tanks broke down during its movement to Normandy. The division's armored forces would be reinforced by the newly attached 102nd SS Heavy Panzer Battalion. This would provide Hohenstaufen with 127 additional combat vehicles including 79 Panther tanks. The original plan for Hohenstaufen to attack towards the Allied beachhead was made impossible by a British offensive to take Caen. The II SS Panzer Corps was instead put into the line to support the weakened forces defending Caen, where Hohenstaufen suffered 1,891 casualties. On 10 July, the division was pulled back into reserve, to be replaced by the 277th Infantry Division. The division's depleted Panzergrenadier regiments were eventually merged to form Panzergrenadier Regiment Hohenstaufen. The division saw much action defending against British armour during Operation Goodwood. During Operation JupiterHohenstaufen destroyed 58 British tanks with many of them being Churchill tanks. After the launch of the Canadian Operation Totalize, Hohenstaufen avoided encirclement in the Falaise pocket and kept the narrow escape route from this pocket open. By 21 August, the Battle of Normandy was over, and the German forces were in full retreat. Obersturmbannführer Walter Harzer was placed in command of the division. It fought several rearguard actions during the retreat through France and Belgium and in early September 1944, the exhausted formation was pulled out of the line for rest and refit near the Dutch city of Arnhem. An old one I just realised never posted. A Spanish militia volunteer standing on 155-millimetre howitzer 1917 Schneider, Barcelona, mid-august 1936. The red handkerchief she is wearing on the picture was the unique distinction of pro-Republican militiamen during the first months of the war. Although because of its colour it was normally related to Communist militia, it quickly spread to other formations, such us the CNT-FAI, which wore a red and black version. Another eminent characteristic is the blue boilersuit, the unofficial uniform of the militia in the Summer of 1936. A full isabelino cap can also be seen, which was replaced by custom red and black caps by the CNT-FAI militia, while other units started removing the tassel to differentiate from Rebel troops.
